Assignment 3

OREO COOKIE

Trenton – In education it is important to maintain an upbeat and positive approach to teaching. Your question does just that when you look at providing a positive learning experience. You also made a good point about students having access to all the various social media sites and as teachers how can we use those tools that students are already interested in, in our classroom. Knowing what apps and how they are being used by students is important information to have when looking at your question. The first Ted Talk you select also acknowledges how some people have a negative view of social media use in the classroom, but the talk then addresses reasons to include social media in classrooms. Another important point you acknowledged is our own ideas about social media, as teachers we need to be open to opportunities to reach all our students. It might be helpful to look at more articles or video about your topic, but you have a good start. You added the line, “moving at a quicker pace than ever before and our teachers need to change as the technology changes,” which is so true. Good job on your assignment.

Chelsey – It’s great to see you are trying to expose your students to all aspects of theatre through the use of social media. It’s easy to see how passionate you are about your job and your students. The podcast is a valuable tool for you and your students, and it seems to offer a variety of areas related to your questions. You presented an interesting use for social media in the classroom by getting tips from actual performers your students would not otherwise have access to in your more rural setting. It allows you to pull in experts from around the globe. Have you thought about how you would handle “expert” advice you may not agree with? Using social media to market school events and to update the community can help you reach people you might not otherwise connect with before. You’re opening up your students to so many possible opportunities, great job.

Molly – You start out by making a good point, as educators we do need to implement social media appropriately in the classroom. Relating social media to the workforce for students is a step in the right direction for their future success. Connected to that is authentic or real world learning, which you understand the value of designing lessons with purpose and meaning for students. It seems you found some good resources for that. Will you be starting the Instagram account for your classroom, and have you considered concerns parents might have for middle school age students? You realize you need to be creative in using social media for your younger students; it’s good to see you look for ways use a tool with so much potential for your classroom.

Matt – I appreciate your approach to having guidelines in place for social media use so the focus remains on instruction. It’s good to study how others are using social media in their classrooms, like your second resource discussed and the sixth article. The resources also acknowledged how it not only brought the world to students but allowed the students to share their ideas, which is important when looking at purpose for the lesson. Have you considered narrowing down your question to your specific subject material; where you able to find any social media related resources targeting what you teach? I agree with your comment that social media lets us as teacher have the opportunity to be more creative in the classroom through exposure to new ideas and creations. Good job on the assignment Matt.

Jonathan – You started off you assignment with an important comment. You do need to know what apps your students use and figure out a way to get your students to as you put it, “embrace those apps they have not used.” You definitely found ways to incorporate social media into the social studies classroom and with authentic purpose. The Canadian example you sited is a good example of this. It was good to see you looked at information addressing students without their own phones or social media accounts, and that you also considered information for opposing views of social media use in the classroom. As a middle school teacher have you thought how you will address potential concerns parents might, especially those parents who do not want their student on social media, at least until the child is older. Good idea you had to teach digital citizenship to your students. You found some good resources for your specific question.
