For anyone up in the SF Bay Area:
Sorry for the cross posting, but we are looking for a new mentor! Feel free to pass along to anyone who might fit this very special and awesome opportunity!

Curiosity Hacked is seeking a new mentor to join us in our mission of hacking the way kids and families learn! We are a nonprofit hackerspace and learning center based in North Oakland, with collaborations and partnerships all over the world. We offer classes and workshops that use skill building and design thinking as a catalyst to personal vision. Our CHILL program (Curiosity Hacked Independent Learning Lab) serves as a micro-democratic school for tweens and teens, using the workshop, our local and global community, guest mentors, field trips, and more to support independent projects and group exhibitions.
This new position will assist our lead mentor and Executive Director in empowering kids to self determine and direct both in our CHILL program and after school/weekend classes and workshops. Must be able to work well with children, particularly in the 11-14 year old age range. Work will include mentorship, physical assistance in building, obtaining and using a wide variety of skills, chaperoning field trips (could be anything from forests to major tech companies), and a willingness to participate in and respect in programs that are learner centered and democratic in process. Other duties will include helping with organization, cleaning, marketing, special events and more as needed. Knowledge of programming, laser cutting, 3D printing, welding/metalwork, and/or electronics is useful, as is an enthusiasm to learn any of these skills. This mentor should be able to take initiative, problem solve, think creatively and expansively, and not only work well in community but be able to lead classes or workshops with confidence and autonomy.
This position will start in Fall 2016 and range 20-25 hours per week based on schedule, pay based on experience. Support and training provided on an ongoing basis. A smaller number of hours will be expected over the summer as we prepare and train for next term.
FYI: Interviews will be conducted by staff AND kids, all of whom have authority to make hiring decisions.
Please contact sam@curiosityhacked for more information with your resume. Learn more about us at www.curiosityhacked.org

May the Force be with you!

Update on my trip for those of you in Vista: I will be in town from 1/13 until 1/18! I plan on surprising David's class on Thursday- which I am super excited about! Beyond Friday's buy back day training, I will be holding 4 hour workshops Saturday-Monday. Saturday sold out in an hour and there was a solid wait list, so we added two more days- I hear there might be a few spots left! Contact Erin English for more info! I can't wait to come spend time with all of you in Vista, and dive deeper into learner centered education, making, and hacking.
Happy New Year!

So, maybe not exactly how the Romans built their chariots, but these are customizable and they performed beautifully in our chariot race!
