Just got back to the flat, settled down on the terrace with a calming drinkie poos, and noticed the shadows created by the potted plants. Life is simple and enjoyable. - sometimes

ODYSSEY
Slowly but surely I'm learning how to pace myself and enjoy the city life with it's full potential. I find myself roaming around the city streets getting excited what is that next thing that I'm going to discover. Whether that is a restaurant, museum or a great shooting location, every new discovery leads to something new. This is one of this secret gems and my representation of it. What do you think?

The Amazing Floating Lady ! - Austin Street Art

This lovely mural is the design of tattoo artist Tina Poe, wife of +David Poe, both owners of +Moon Tattoo in Austin, Texas. Tina gave this design to local artists/mural painters +SprATX who created this mural on the exterior end wall of Moon Tattoo.

Panorama Creation

I decided to create a stand alone piece of art from this mural by creating a panorama using 4 horizontal images stitched together. The stitching was done in Lightroom panorama and then brought into Photoshop for cloning and tweaking.

By standing close to the building wall, a section of the mural was captured. Moving along the wall and maintaining the same distance from the wall, the other sections of the mural were captured, making sure that sufficient overlap occurred between images so the software could stitch the 4 images into one panorama.

The resulting panorama was an image of the entire end of the building containing the mural. To make the panorama more appealing, some things appearing around the mural needed to be eliminated: store awning that wrapped around the upper left edge of the mural; electrical wiring appearing in the upper right hand corner of the mural; building parking lot light fixture in the upper center of mural casting shadow down onto stomach of floating lady; tree shadows on black bricks in center of mural; the interface of mural with parking lot had grass and weeds growing onto bottom of mural.

Cloning

All of the above problems were solved by cloning appropriate mural areas over undesirable areas. The difficulty of this is the wall was of two sizes of brick and the pattern of the brickwork had to match. This meant that where cloning samples were to begin had to match the pattern where they were to be applied.

The most tedious cloning had to do with eliminating the orange awning occupying the upper left hand corner of the building. After cloning in the bricks to cover the awning, a gap in the circle of white dots was created. I cloned the white dots back in with the original white dots. Examining the white dots revealed an alternating pattern of large dot/small dot. Also, when a dot covered a grout joint, the paint did not extend down onto the grout. After varying sized of dots were cloned in, when they spanned a grout joint, the neighboring joint area was cloned over the center of the dot so that the replacement dots over grout joints would match the original dots spanning grout joints in the lower part of the mural.

The same attention to detail happened in the cloning out of the attached building parking lot light. The replacing brick pattern had to match what was behind the light. In eliminating the shadow cast by the light fixture onto the mural, other light colored parts of the mural were used to cover the shadow so that the color and texture would match.

Final Touches

A larger canvas border was added for the panorama, contrast was tweaked and a little unsharp filter and noise was applied in Photoshop.

THE RIGHT PATH
For this post I went back to my archives and decided to finally finish editing of this interior shot that I left unfinished for some time. I love shooting old churches from time to time and this one was one of my favorites back in downtown Philadelphia.Taking out the color and pointing out some highlights I tried to simplify the scene and make everything more enjoyable. I also tried to bring some mystery to this scene cause I like the dramatic and dynamic shots. What do you think?

Head of Bight

Head of the Bight (also called Head of Bight) is a bay located in South Australia at the most northern extent of the Great Australian Bight. Head of Bight offers fantastic views. Bunda Cliffs are part of Australia’s most awe-inspiring coastlines and HoB is the perfect location to take in this majestic sight.

The Little Chapel That Stood
Lower Manhattan, New York

Right Around The Corner From The World Trade Center, What Seems Like A Cute Little Church/Graveyard Site... And As I Walked Closer It Has A Very Very Old School, Dark, Ominous Edge About It That The Surrounding Buildings Didn't. Of Course My Curiosity Got The Best Of Me And Asked John (My Co-worker That's Taking Us Around The City) What This Church May Be?... He Answered With Awe Stating That This Little Chapel Survived The 9/11 Attack Without Even A Single Broken Window Other Than Dust And Debris. Hence It's Nickname "The Little Chapel That Stood." The Chapel Is Closed For Renovation Until The Fall.

In 1766 This Was The Tallest Building In New York City, St. Paul's Chapel. This Has To Be One Of The Most Historical U.S. Building I Have Yet To Walk Into (Do I Hear A D.C. Trip Coming Up ;)). George Washington Was Said To Worship Here After His Inauguration Among Quite A Few Known Historical Figures. It Also Contains About 800 Gravestones And 30 Vaults That Lie Under The Churchyard And Chapel, With The Oldest Tombstone In NYC Dated By To 1681. One Of Our Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton Is Also Buried Here.

Moon Tattoo ! - Austin Street Art

The panorama mural artwork below is the creation of +David Poe and his wife Tina of the +Moon Tattoo Studio in Austin, Texas. This unique design occupies one complete wall in the studio.

David and Tina are super friendly folks and really made my day a great one! This past Sunday I was photographing a large mural of a floating tattooed lady (designed by Tina Poe) on the outside wall of their studio. A couple parked their car and got out of their car smiling as they see me photographing the floating lady. They open up their studio and shortly thereafter Tina Poe comes out and introduces herself. We talk briefly about the "floating lady" and Tina invites me inside the studio so I can photography a large design on one walls of their studio. I met David and talked to him about being a tattoo artist. He enjoys doing fine detailed tattoos. I really enjoyed the conversation with Tina and David and appreciate the invitation to come inside their new studio and photograph another great design. Their friendly jester just made my day!

Capturing and Processing Image:

As mentioned this was a large wall mural. On the right side was a large chair that was blocking part of the mural. On the upper left of the mural was some air conditioning duct work blocking a portion of the left crescent moon. To get the mural I turned the camera into portrait position, stood close to the mural, and took 3 overlapping images . This allowed me to "see" past the blocking chair.

The three images were stitched together in the panorama mode in Lightroom and then brought into Photoshop. There were shadows cast upon the wall. This being a black and white image, I used the paint bucket tool to turn areas with shadows into white. Duct work covered the left tip of the crescent moon. I selected the right half of the crescent moon and flipped it horizontally and pasted it over the missing portion of the left crescent moon. The image was taken into the raw processor and various slider were adjusted to get a white background and a darkened design. The shading in the design was done by David and Tina with fine black lines.

CHICAGO
I manage to take this shot just a minute or two before all heaven break loose above the Chicago. Despite all the weather problems, that night the shoot was success and I walk out with some great shots from that evening. I really wanted to have this in my portfolio. The trick was not to walk away with the cliche composition and to add something interesting on my own. I played with the few different exposure times. I couldn't combine one exposure time and get the clouds that I wanted and the bus trails that I needed to hide the visual noise behind it. I than ended up using one for the clouds and one for the bus trails, to get the final result. The 10sec exposure was used for the clouds and 1.5sec exposure for the bus trails. What do you think?
