La Magnifica + El Mar, Santa Maria del Mar, Cuba, 2015
Every time I think I have nothing else to add about her I see another image and the words seem to flow naturally. Last year was her 8th year with me, gracing my portfolio with a level of creativity rarely seen over such a span of time.
Her family has become my family on the island, and her mother treats me like her sons. Last year they welcomed me into their home for the summer, and never once put themselves in front of my work... although I gladly did when such events as birthdays presented themselves!
Here she is at one of our favorite spots, the beach of Santa Maria del Mar. We have always chosen to head for the end of the beach, where there are fewer families in the early morning. Usually only a few fishermen are there, along with one or two fortunate families.
She is wearing one of the costumes made possible by the generous spirits from last year's Costumes for Ballerinas in Cuba campaign on Indiegogo. She was so proud to receive them, and never thought about removing the tags from the pieces as a result.
She and the other girls learned that our circle of friends were so moved by their images that they wanted to pay forward their gratitude through this display of generosity. As such they accepted with open arms and helped me make even more incredibly poignant images. Here she is, with her hands directed to the sky, and the gentle waves striking her flowing dress.
When I return from India in late April, I will once again present this campaign and hope we can do even more!www.halimina.orgwww.halimina.blogspot.com
