Comics are Weird
Things you didn't know about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

10: Parody Time
The book started as a parody of Daredevil. From the Toxic waste (ooze) to the Ninja Clan (Hand and Foot) to the grizzled Martial arts master (Stick and Splinter).

9: The Sports Warrior
Casey Jones was also a parody. He was a knock on Anti-heroes such as Punisher and Lobo.

8: Violence!!!
In the original comics run the Turtles were very gritty and would kill with little compunction. From slicing up ninjas to beating up gang members and Leonardo even killed the Shredder via a decapitation.

7: Toned down Toon
When it came time to adapt the books for Television the entire concept was rewritten. The violence was toned down significantly and humor was added. This has since been the norm everywhere....but more mature themes have been explored in the modeen adaptations.

6: Edited for Content
In Europe the series was renamed Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles and was edited to remove almost all of Michaelangelo's Nunchucks, which were banned.

5: Merchandising!
Between 1987-1996 the Ninja Turtles merchandise made millionaires out of the creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. After owning the rights for nearly 30 years they were sold to Viacom in 2010.

4: Uncle Shredder
James Avery (R.I.P) best known as "Uncle" Phil Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air voiced the original Shredder.

3: Toyetic
The Turtles have been adapted into toys constantly since 1985. The original tv series had over 500 unique toys and action figures.

2: Very Punny
Humorist Rex Lee was a Ghostwriter for the series and helped create some of the very punny Mutants seen in the series. His contributions include;
Mondo Gecko
Napoleon Bonafrog
Ace Duck

1: Quite a lot of Turtles
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been adapted for the big and small screen a lot over the years. In addition to the original tv series there was;

TV:
Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu-hen: a 1996 Anime OVA
Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation: a loose sequel to the films which followed the Turtles now in their 20's facing off against an interdimensional Dragon.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: (2003-2009): A modern take on the characters. A bit more mature then its 80's counterpart. Renamed TMNT Fast Forward then TMNT Back to the Sewers.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: (2012-Now): The current Animated series from Nickelodeon.

Movies:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time
TMNT
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
TMNT: Out of the Shadows

Bonus:
Go Go Ninja Turtles:
During the Power Rangers in Space season the Rangers villain Astronima arrives in New York city and brainwashes the Turtles to fight the Rangers on her behalf. The Turtles are eventually freed by the Rangers and help them fight the Villain. This episode was a back door pilot for the Saban Produced Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation mentioned above.
