CASH IN SCHOOL - THE ENTERTAINER

Some of us never want to leave school during the holidays.
We know ourselves…school is always fun, parties, gist, friends, all in one place and within walking distance. Plus, most importantly, no family around to spoil show.

While your friends are organizing the events, contests, parties, etc, view these moments as opportunities to make #money and build your talents, all while having a good time.

You could provide the music by mixing it or by being the actual singer or instrumentalist. You could also put together a play and charge people to come watch it.

Adding these activities to your CV should also be a plus to your employer as the ability to successfully pull and engage a crowd shows a strong presence of charisma and confidence.

CASH IN SCHOOL - THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Imagine a world where at every event, everyone has a selfie stick… or that shoe thing that you can stick your phone in and then lift your leg up to take a “selfie”. How ridiculous would everyone look, plus would there even be enough space for all those sticks? How many people have you even seen using selfie sticks at events? Not a lot, I bet.

Have the number of photographers declined since the dawn of the selfie stick? I don’t think so. They are still present, taking paper and digital pictures and recording events.

Therefore, there is still a huge opportunity to earn a steady #income from photography, especially while in school where the social scene is significantly more active than on the outside.

Here are a few twists you should consider adding to the trade:

- Deliver soft copies of pictures taken at events: transfer the images to a small laptop, then send via Bluetooth (or other methods) to your customers.

- At events, ask nicely for permission to take photos; try to precede your request with a compliment.

- Look smart and clean

In addition to photographing at events, consider taking “artsy” photos of rare or comical sights. To give off a more professional vibe, put your signature on and frame them before sale.

Sure, there are a variety of ways to spice up the #business. Please share your thoughts in the comment section.

CASH IN SCHOOL - ALL THINGS FITNESS

Eat some protein, hit the gym, chase after, and finally, leap onto the Fitness Bandwagon.

How to look the part:

- Have healthy-looking skin,
- Carry green home-made juices, all the time,
- Talk about green home-made juices, all the time,
- Maintain a hungry gleam in your eyes,
- Always, always hold a green leaf, with which to beat your audience to submission.

But jokes apart, while the average person would eat everything in moderation, including the unhealthy, non-nutritious foods, the really healthy people take it several steps further.

They study their foods, look for organic varieties, try to grow their own vegetables, eat clean and take supplements to boost their overall well-being.

Learn how to do this, including the exercises required to stay fit with this diet, and then hold a series of classes:

- Cooking classes (With focus on healthy foods)
- Fitness Programs (Pilates, Bootcamps, etc)
- Gardening classes
- Organize bike rides
- Plan milestone runs: 1km – 5kms, etc

You could also offer private lessons for people with more specific needs.
Do not limit yourself to just your mates, extend your services to your lecturers and have fun fattening your #wallet with #money.

CASH IN SCHOOL - FASHION DESIGNER

Old is Gold - Anonymous

Fashion is indeed circular; albeit with the injection of “new” articles, clothing which were almost banished generations ago, have become normalised today.
Sure our ancestors will be rolling in their graves at the audacity of the 21st century.

Examples of these “jaw-dropping” styles are:
- Leggings, that have come back as Yoga pants,
- Jumpsuits that have been tweaked from the Disco style of yore to Office appropriate,
- Maxi skirts, dresses, now worn with crop tops etc,
- Inner-wear-out: “Shimmi-like” dresses… (Caution: Do not wear this at home in front of your mother).

You get the drift.
This is the age of self-expression and style permissiveness…think ‘Ye West’s interesting “Homeless person” line of clothes.

Get creative, be inspired by your day-to-day activities, and make clothes that are trendy, or unique yet appealing to your audience.

Once you’ve broken even and have entered #Profit Street, be sure to thank your parents…because believe it or not, the style of their generation has definitely influenced yours.

Become an internet star or tutor by creating and sharing your work!

CASH IN SCHOOL - INTERNET GEEK

The Internet has changed everything...Think I'm joking, ask Google. There are videos, papers and write ups for almost everything including how to brush your teeth, how to 'adult', how to wear makeup, do your hair and my personal favourite...How to search on Google!

While some may argue that deepening internet penetration is making people think / research less, it still provides a channel for you to make #money, especially if you fit one of the categories in our caption above. There is a lot you could do and some of our suggestions are outlined below:

1) Start a blog/vlog that captures school gossip, fashion, dress tips amongst other things, grow followership and sign up for AdSense.

2) Start a 'Help for a Fee' support portal for undergraduates that are having study challenges .

As an online tutor, especially a humorous one, you could #earn a stable #income for views. All you need is a good phone camera, the required knowledge and you’re set.
Ensure you market yourself on your social media page to friends and remember that each view is some cool #cash in your pocket.

Learn more on how to make #cash in #school.

For those of us who are dependants or currently schooling, you may have heard these words at one time or another from your parents/guardians when you ask them for money during the school term, semester or holidays: “There’s no #money, manage this”, “Money does not grow on trees”, “What do you need money for?”, "I just gave you Nxxxx two weeks ago, what did you do with it?" and so forth.
In this series, we are going to look at various ways you can earn a small but steady #income while at #school so you don't have to bother your parents, relatives and guardians that often.

1: Hair – Make it, Style it, Lock it. Shave it.

Everyone has hair...we only differ in how we wear it : long, short, unruly, neat, natural, extensions, curls, relaxed, you name it. Hair is one thing people will always spend money on, why?, because we all want to look good, trendy and cool. And therein lies the opportunity we'll be looking at in this episode.

Even in times of economic difficulty, ladies will spend a ton of money on various, creative hairstyles while guys will go hungry just to maintain that suave look. You can cash in on this emotional need by setting up your very own makeshift salon on campus!

The truth is, getting involved in hair-styling only requires as much capital as you can spare. You can open a proper salon if you have the funds or operate from your hostel room (referrals are important for this model). The important things are the basics; clippers, mirrors, combs (guys) and attachments, extensions, nails et al (ladies).

After that all you really need is a twist the makes you different from every other person offering the same service. It could be pricing, style or a niche like dread locking. You could also introduce a magnet polarity model by giving hair cuts to guys if you're a lady or styling lady's hair if you are a guy!

There's tons of money in hair...You just have to be creative.

Please share your thoughts and share the article with friends.

WANTS AND NEEDS: CAN YOUR BUSINESS SURVIVE BOTH?

You own a company.
Call it a startup, call it daddy’s money transformed to brick and mortar, call it your blood, sweat and tears (shed while doing school runs or hustling for loans).

Bottom line is that you have a company.
Now you have bragging rights, “I’m the CEO of so & so ltd”.
It’s alright, you earned it one way or the other, go ahead, blow your trumpet.
As time goes by, you will put the trumpet away as you learn more about the necessary humility and modesty that should come with owning a business.

Certainly, only a few people would turn down an offer to work at the likes of Google. Most people have probably seen the pictures of the Google offices, the colours, the games, and the fun. They even have permission to nap at work?!? If I received a job offer from Google, I would be the most productive employee ever!

Although it is extremely rare to find employers who adopt Google’s operational policies some startups have bought into the idea that: Comfort + Play + Work = low staff Turnover x High Employee satisfaction. Contrary to some beliefs, as a startup providing such a relaxed working environment could adversely affect your company. Whoops! Can’t let all that blood, sweat and tears that you shed go to waste now, can we? The famous adage “Dream Big, Start Small” rings true in this case.

Rent a small space, leaving room for your staff to grow into it within the next 2 years. Be sure to purchase basic workplace necessities such as furniture, Computer systems, stationary, fire extinguisher and other work tools. These are your needs.

If you have something left over at the end of your first few months, here are some benefits you can provide for your staff:

- Subsidized lunch & Water dispenser: most pioneer staff go into the job knowing that their diet plan is about to go out the window. Mealtimes are forgotten or merged into one 10-minute window where everyone wolfs down some questionable junk food or crackers. You can provide a water dispenser for your staff; this is very important as your employees are able to stay hydrated at no personal cost.
Do not, however, hire a chef.

- Corporate Health Instructor: At some point, the startup will need to compensate their staff for the long hours spent working and the toll it will take on their health. Doing this shows care and is likely to increase employee loyalty.
Do not give out gym card memberships or fill up an empty space with gym equipment.
As a startup do not spend money filling your office with games in every available space.

- Leave out 13th month and bonus payments for the first few years. Grow your business foundation first, then put one reward system in place once there is a stable influx of profit. Give growth a bit more time before implementing the second reward.

With time, hard work, profit and a dedicated team of employees who share your vision for the company, you can slowly begin to adapt your environment turning it into that Google-like office that you always dreamt of.

Raising Business Children

Who says business is just for adults?

If your child shows an inclination to business, make out time to teach them their interest, how to make money out of it and the value of money. They will grow with that knowledge.

Encourage them to do chores, or small age-appropriate businesses and when they receive their allowance, explain to them the benefit of paying themselves first and the importance of saving.

Then sit back, and watch them eventually grow into successful entrepreneurs.

4 Factors to Consider Before Hiring Your First Employee

1. Get your office ready – Starting your company solo may have made you convert a small area of your living room into an office with a desk, chair, computer, stationary and mood music (if you’re into that). However, now that you need to grow your staff strength, you realize that the few extra inches of space between your chair and the couch will definitely not accommodate another human being. Even if you have the means to rent a proper office space, to minimize cost, consider renting a co-working space.

2. Think about the recruitment process – By now, you should have examined if you really need to hire someone, and why you cannot outsource certain aspects of your projects instead of bringing someone in. Concluding that the new employee is essential, you should detail the responsibilities the staff would undertake. Don’t worry if the tasks don’t fit one particular role; most start-ups and small businesses begin this way. As you grow bigger, you will realize the need for structure and will work towards it.

3. Get the wages right – You need to work out your potential employee’s worth to your company. If after calculations, you find that you cannot afford to pay your staff for their full-time services, then consider employing them as part-timers. Either way, ensure that you pay your staff fully every month at the agreed time.

4. Don’t forget your taxes – Both P.A.Y.E. (Pay As You Earn) and P.I.T. (Personal Income Tax). Consult with an accountant and a lawyer for clarification.

CASH IN SCHOOL – THE CONVENIENCE STORE

It would surprise you the amount of #money that changes hands rather swiftly on a daily basis on your campus. Deals are being struck, items are requested and delivered. Needs are being met. There is a lot that is needed almost daily on a campus filled with students and staff.

You can cater to these varied needs by bringing the items closer to the people and of course, you would make your #profit for this convenience.

Look for shops where you can purchase these daily (also possibly seasonal) items in bulk, then sell retail and of course, make your #profit .
Be sure to check expiry dates and ensure you are dealing with a trustworthy source.

The daily items people need and use may not jump to mind immediately, but they include (though are not limited to):

- Female hygiene products (sanitary pads, tampons, etc)
- Toiletries (toilet paper, deodorant, soap, detergent, toothpaste & toothbrush, etc)
- Condiments (seasoning, ketchup, mustard, etc)
- Candles, matches, flashlights & batteries.
- Adaptors and multi-sockets
- Quick foods – (Bread & Beverage, Noodles, Garri, Cereal, etc.)
- Airtime
- Seasonal gifts (Christmas decorations & cards, Valentine cards, Muslim holiday cards, etc)

You get the idea by now…if you look hard enough, you will definitely find other needs to satisfy that will earn you an #income .

CASH IN SCHOOL

You’re one of the lucky car owners in school; that’s fantastic!
It is cool to have a ride, isn’t it? A quick way to get you from point A to point B.

However, while moving from one destination to another, consider operating your vehicle as a taxi. Give a lift to passengers who are heading along or in the same direction in exchange for a fare. This is a quick way to earn #cash with little effort on your part.

If you have some extra time between classes, studies and enjoying a social life at school, you can use your vehicle to transport people around for a fee.

To be popular and successful among your peers, do the following to gain an advantage:

- Clean up your vehicle. Nothing says professional more than a tidy, clean-smelling vehicle.
- Offer your passengers some nice music.
- Stay away from topical issues on politics or football, especially if you carry more than one passenger at a time.
- Always be polite.

You could figure out more ways to be a stand out transporter within your campus. This could also be a #job you can fall back on if job opportunities are lacking right after school. You could even make a solid #business post-graduation as a delivery person for online merchants among other things.

CASH IN SCHOOL

Some people are just born with the ability to identify flaws in a #business, then offer valuable solutions which tend to result in significant improvement in #brand and #business health, including in the #profit margin.
While some are born that way, others have to learn it.

Whichever category you fall into, this is also a viable source of #income while at school. As a consultant, you learn to acquaint yourself with your schoolmates’ businesses and the industries within which they operate.

By taking up this role, you will find yourself well positioned to offer valuable insights to your clients. This skill will definitely come in handy in future as it sets you up to have an edge over your colleagues in the corporate world.

Cash In School - The Fix-It / Clean-It Guy

It is normal for things to get broken and for people to get messy. This leaves you room to consider being the Fix-It guy.

In addition to that, you could also offer cleaning services, especially for the flats of students who live off-campus. As long as you do a great job and this brings you a steady allowance, there’s no shame in it.

For those into gadgets, use your holidays to take apart and put together some appliances and gadgets, use YouTube to learn how these things work.

As you learn, practice with your own devices and gadgets. Help your mother fix her fridge, help your grandparents fix their fan, help your sister fix her phone…basically, doing this will give you the experience you need.

Once you’ve gained this practical knowledge, go back to school, offer your services and charge for them.

Open a Zenith Bank #Aspire account to put some money aside and grow your savings.

CASH IN SCHOOL - BEAUTY TREATMENT

Who doesn’t love to look good and be spoilt every once in a while? Receiving massages and the other spa trimmings are a surefire path to relaxation.

Learning to provide these services would ensure you have a #skill that you can develop into an #income stream for the future, if you ever you choose to own such a business and have employees.

A classic way to acquire these initial skills is to spend your next vacation as an intern in a salon, massage parlour or spa.
Learn the various techniques and the oils to use for relaxation, rejuvenation, energizing and relieving of muscles.
Learn how to care for natural nails, how to fix fake ones, and as an added value, learn to use nail polish colours that suit a person’s skin tone.

Essentially, if you acquire these skills and add a twist of your own, you will definitely make bank.

Make Food and Make Money in this new lesson on how to make #cash in #school.

CASH IN SCHOOL - FOOD

Hello everyone, Last week we looked at hair styling as a way to make money while schooling. We welcome comments and contributions.
This week our focus will be on food.

Food in a collective sense has been one of the most important items in the history of man, because people must eat to stay alive. Evolution pundits even postulate that man's ascension into a higher mammal started after he ate meat...that's a topic for another day though.

So, the elevated position accorded food in the hierarchy of needs and the fast paced lifestyle of most undergraduates make 'Food' a good way of making #money while #schooling, or why do you think undergraduates unconsciously congregate in the rooms of the 'Chosen Few' that know how to cook.

If you know how to cook, bake or roast, then don't let that talent go to waste. Open a small eatery where your school mates can get their daily nutrition, unwind, relax and hangout. Who know you might soon have the most popular spot around especially if it has a cool name and your chow reminds them of mama's cooking.

If you don't have the required funds to set up shop, simply cook for more than your immediate circle of concern, pack the food nicely and get someone to distribute (in exchange for #cash that is) to the hungry market you have on campus.

Cook creatively...especially with today's economic realities. Meeting the needs of your fellow students with delicious, well-cooked meal, in this period of austerity, will ensure that your pockets remain full.

Stay in touch for next week's tip on how to make #cashinschool.

Please share. Also, share your thoughts in the comment section.

MAKE YOURSELF A SOUGHT AFTER HUMAN RESOURCE.

- Do the grunt work. It’s okay, get it done and then get curious about the brain work.

- Take time out to learn about your industry; slowly but surely, you’ll surprise yourself with how much knowledge you’ve gained.

- Train yourself. Might sound expensive, but do it. Companies are seduced by proactive individuals with relevant experience.

- Spend a few years in your first company honing your skills.

- Look for an opportunity to mentor / train someone in your field; gauge your level of knowledge and competency with your mentee’s / trainee’s ability to understand the tasks and be productive.

- Create and consistently maintain a LinkedIn profile and other professional networks.

Do all this and the top companies in your industry will come headhunting you.

THE EMPLOYMENT PARADOX

It is commonplace for those of us in 9-5 paid employment to envy the supposedly more flexible lifestyles of our friends that are self-employed doing one form of business or another.

We mostly wonder where they get the strength and courage to forgo a steady income and pursue a dream that may or may not succeed.

We can’t in most cases understand why they’d leave the perks of being an employee – the steady income, the health insurance, the paid vacation, the 13th month and the end of year bonus.

On the other hand, those of us in #self-employment also envy the income consistency associated with paid #employment and look towards the day our businesses would generate such steady returns.

Despite the pros and challenges of both tangent, you can still get the best of both worlds.
Have you ever considered #investing in a friend’s business or if you’re a #business owner, have you considered getting #capital injections from your friends in paid employment?

Why not?

One straight benefit of such a collaboration is more income for the 9-5 worker and expansion of the entrepreneur’s #business

Give this idea some thought and share your opinion with us.

If you have such an arrangement running, please share your experiences to help others

HOW TO GET JOB INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

This may sound funny, but give it a try it anyway.

Say you got your first and possibly perfect current job through connections – family, friends or alumni – and therefore, you did not get to experience the usual rigorous interview process. Yet, you wish to practice in case the cozy rug of this perfect job is suddenly pulled from under you, and you find yourself in the dark of the job market for the first time in your life.

Here’s what to do. You can keep the job you have right now (as long as you have job satisfaction), and still learn how to be a successful job candidate.

- Apply for jobs in your current area of expertise or any others that you might be interested in.

- Research how to ace an interview for your dream job or any job for that matter.

- Practice as if your next rent, electricity bill or fuel fill-up depended on it,

- Present yourself before the interviewing committee on the appointed day.

- Relax, be confident and do the best you can.

Do this maybe once or twice a year to polish your sales pitch.

Now, you’re prepared to hustle for a new job!
