This day in history (13 February) saw Thomas Edison observing the Edison effect in 1880. In 2004 the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics announced that it had discovered the universe's largest known diamond, white dwarf star BPM 37093. They named the star "Lucy" after The Beatles' song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".

October 23, 1970, Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The rocket-powered vehicle Blue Flame driven by Gary Gabelich  set a new World Land Speed Record which lasted for more than a decade and became the first car in the history to achieve 1000km/h.
