The river Hayle is one of the most polluted rivers in the UK.. Contaminated with heavy metals from 16th & 17th century mining. The river has been called the metal river. At one point it was said that all the fish had been wiped out until it was discovered that a population had mutated to survive in the contaminated water....

This is what South West Water euphemistically call rag. It is a mix of toilet wipes, sanitary towels, condoms, cotton buds & anything else that shouldn't be put down the toilet.. The smell is horrific

Just over a weeks worth of "rag".. South West Water told locals, that they would store it in sealed containers with odour control after the locals discovered that they were storing up to 6 months worth on site..

At meeting with local MP at sewage sludge barn at Hayle Sewage Treatment Works.. This is after South West Water spent over 2 weeks clearing out the barn. Note the tide mark on the wall..

the stench of Hydrogen Sulphide over the past couple of weeks has been getting worse. It's been that bad it has actually woken me up at 5.30 in the morning. All windows & doors were closed at the time

Hayle sewage treatment works has been stinking up the village of St Erth for over 4 decades
