Fear of Technology, or Tech-Shock?
From the Article: Byrne, creative director at BuzzFeed UK and Hallam, head of social at Mindshare UK, told a Mindshare Huddle that sci-fi had become less imaginative over the past 20 years and they were worried that a fear of the internet and the future of technology could be to blame.

If you're in the LA area or are willing to come here,  I'd love to invite you to a #cyberpunk event in May that is an immersive, cosplay event filled with drink, song, dance, technology and art in celebration of the cyberpunk age that is upon us.  This is an event for Cyberpunks by Cyberpunks. You can help make the event happen by buying a discounted ticket from our Indiegogo campaign. If you just want to donate because you cannot make it, we have some very cool perks for you too. We're looking forward to meeting new friends worldwide.

When I think of the "coffins" in Cheap Hotel (in William Gibson's Neuromancer), this is not far from what I imagine.
Tiny city dwellings might be in vogue today. But in Japan people have been living in the Nakagin Capsule Tower's 100-square-foot housing for decades.

Interesting conclusion.  I don't thinlk the 2nd will ever be irrelevant.  Now see Lybia, Syria Tunisia.  Egypt and Iran offer interesting cases as well.  All of them very murky on the question of citizen vs professional military

In Egypt you saw a military largely sidelined and seeking political solution.  the military basically backed the strongest horse at the time, the Muslim Brotherhood then anti-morisi democratic factions.  The main threats come from opposing civilian factions trying to strong arm the other into submission while pursuing an "electoral strategy".

Irans military sat out their Arab (Persian) spring but had civilian paramilitaries the (basij) doing their dirty work.

Change the infill trait for the ability of jumping from one wired brain to another, and this is pretty sweet.

I think cyberpunk is making a comeback. This book is by an author I know - a noirish cyberpunk, set in a flooded Bristol. Worth a read.

I'm undertaking the creation of a CyberPunk world in my upcoming novel I'll be writing next month. I would welcome any input from the educated members in this community of things that MUST be included, as well as tropes to avoid.

I've learned a ton browsing through these communities about look and feel. The Synopsis to my novel is included though I am not looking to create the distinct Dystopia that usually is a part of CyberPunk. Other than that, I'd like to remain true to the genre and will gladly consider any advice offered.

Lithium: The Devastation of Gods

(It's NaNoWriMo time again which means time to dedicate the month of November to drafting another full novel.)

Synopsis: A Cyberpunk adventure.

Lithium is a world torn apart. Technology is commonplace and integrated into humanity in the most literal way. Unfortunately with progress came conflict. Conflict driven by religion. A religion as real as the basic laws of physics which power the technology of the world.

Two Gods are bored. Brothers that used to be worshiped and provide for the world of Lithium are no longer needed. With their divine wives supporting and emboldening them, they entertain themselves through trivial contests and battles that decimate the other's worshipers and nation. When one goes too far and unleashes a creature so devastating it cannot be stopped even by divinity, the true end of Lithium may be at hand.

Now a group of humans are called upon by the Goddess Supreme. A mix of talents that only they possess. Magic, strategy, hacking, engineering, mineralogy. Only they can stop the creature that is stronger than the Gods.

-----

A new world constructed from the ground up and the heavens down. Three warring Nations trying to survive in a technological apocalypse, and at the mercy of Gods and Goddesses with egos as large as their concern for consequence is small.

Post your cyberpunk essays, etc., to a new group on Medium.
The garageband aesthetic of high-tech, low-life existing somewhere in the matrix of Cold War uncertainties, military superpowers, multinational corporations, punk rock, the 24-hour media cycle, and personal electronics.

My newest article for H+ Magazine, wherein I attempt to refute the "death-gives-meaning-to-life" platitude. First I argue that it is based upon false premises, and go on to show that even if we took those false premises as true, it is still wrong (for a different reason than the argument's premises are).
