In the past, we had recommended using GWX Control Panel to get rid of the Windows 10 popup notification. But since Steve Gibson wrote a utility called Never10, we now recommend that instead. Never10 simply performs the system editing required to stop Windows from automatically upgrading to Windows 10. This means there is no software that needs to remain installed on the computer, and Never10 can be deleted immediately after you run it.

If you suspect your Gmail account may have been hacked, there's a quick and easy way to get an activity log. When looking at your inbox, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and look in the lower right side. It will tell you when the last account activity was, and it has a link to "Details." Clicking on that link will show a log of all the recent activity on your account. It will show the IP address of the computer used for each login, as w...

Keeping backups of photos taken with your smartphone is very important, in the event that your phone gets lost, stolen, or broken. It's also a good way to free up space on your device after you've taken a lot of pictures. There are a number of cloud photo backup options, including Apple's iCloud, Flickr, OneDrive, and Google Photos.

If you have Windows 7 or 8, you should see an icon in your system tray that prompts you to reserve a copy of Windows 10. This upgrade will be free for all Windows 7 and 8 users, and users of the insider program have stated that it fixes a lot of the frustrations people had with Windows 8. Microsoft will be releasing Windows 10 to the public on Wednesday, but there are a few things you should do before upgrading.

Google recently released a new Photos app, with free unlimited cloud storage for 1080p video files and photos up to 16 MP in quality. It makes it easy to browse and search through all of your photos, but you may have discovered some unfamiliar photos after installing it. This is because the app searches your entire device, and displays the photos it finds in the app. At first glance it may seem to be an error, but there's a way you can quickly fi...

Google Maps has a feature that makes it possible to create your own customized maps that you can then share with friends or embed on a website. To do this, go to google.com/mymaps and sign in with your Google login. Then click the "Create a New Map" button. This will take you to an interface where you can add various things to the map. Most of us use an email service on the web, such as Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail. That means that our email messages are stored on their servers in the cloud, and typically isn't ever downloaded to your local system. There are some ways you can do this, however, to keep your own copy of those valuable email messages. First, check for a download option that may be provided to you by the email service itself. It may let you download a copy of your...

If you plug in a hard drive and can't get it to work, it may be that the drive isn't formatted properly for that operating system. For instance, if you plug in a drive that had been formatted with a Mac into a PC running Windows, it won't be readable. The same thing will happen with a drive that had been formatted using Linux.

Johnny Jet has some quick tips for getting cheaper airfare to go home for the holidays: 1. Be flexible. You're not going to get a deal leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday like everyone else wants to do. 2. Stay away from the low fare carriers. Even though it shows a really low price, you're actually going to end up paying more if you're checking or carrying a bag on. 3. Consider the time of day. Leave the time blank when searching for t...

A custom email address means having your own name or business after the @ sign. For instance, instead of @gmail.com or @yahoo.com, your email address would be @[yournamehere].com. Once you have your own email address independent of a webmail service like Gmail or Yahoo, you have full control of where your email goes. This will basically be a forwarding address, so if you'd like to switch mail providers, you won't have to tell everyone to email y...

When your internet speed seems to slow down to a crawl, it can be useful to put it to the test and find out exactly what speeds you're getting. But it may be misleading to just check one speed test website. This is because some internet service providers actually give priority to certain speed test sites, giving you a faster reading than what is actually true for the rest of your browsing. In fact, some internet service providers encourage you to...

On June 15, 2015, password manager LastPass made an announcement that its password database was hacked and some user account information had been stolen. Since LastPass has uses encryption and many layers of protection to slow down hackers, the damage will be minimal for LastPass users. While the hackers may have obtained the database of master passwords, they still don't have immediate access to everyone's passwords. That information has been en...
