Linux and Antivirus

Do I need anti-virus ?? Isnt Linux Virus free ??

For the most part, Linux is engineered in a fashion that makes it hard for viruses to run but there are many reasons you may need a Virus scanner on your penguin box,

to scan a Windows drive in your PC
to scan a Windows-based network attached server or hard drive
to scan Windows machines over a network
to protect a Windows virtual machine from within the virtual machine
to scan files you are going to send to other people
to scan e-mail you are going to forward to other people

** some Windows viruses can run with Wine. **

Linux virus infections are theoretically possible and are sold on underground forums worldwide for around $2000.

So do you need an anti-virus??

Whonix is an operating system focused on anonymity, privacy and security. It's based on the Tor anonymity network[5], Debian GNU/Linux[6] and security by isolation. DNS leaks are impossible, and not even malware with root privileges can find out the user's real IP.

Looking for a co-founder in Bangalore.

Guys,
I know PLUG is not exactly the place to post for a co-founder in Bangalore but given the quality & experience of the people here, I hope this gets to the right people.

We are an early stage startup, in the field of heterogeneous computing.  We are a very experienced team and are looking at adding an additional technical co-founder.

This is an opportunity for programmers and architects with extensive experience in parallel programming and working with hardware & device drivers.  The work is very interesting and cutting-edge if you look forward to working on new algorithms - you get to work on some very interesting problems.  We are early stage and this gives you an opportunity to get some serious stakes in the Organization.

Key skills that we're looking for are:
We are looking for a senior hands-on product architect/programmer with significant experience in parallel programming, the Linux Kernel, device drivers and in developing complex parallel algorithms.  You must have deep knowledge that you have demonstrated in the past.  We bring the vision, product-management & sales experience to the table, we want you to bring programming experience.
You must be a self starter & be very persistent.  We are looking for people with product experience.  You should have been an architect at a product definition & design team in the past.  You would need to code and ideally should have contributed to the Linux kernel.
Since this is a co-founder position, you would work with other co-founders to conceptualize and architect a new product in the middleware/kernel space.  Our key expectation is to work with us (including our other technical co-founder); craft the architecture and write the initial code of the product.
An early-stage startup has its ups and downs, you must be mature enough to hang on along with us.  This is a full-time position.

Like to have: Verilog/VHDL design, development and validation experience will be really nice.

Like I said, if you are interested or know someone, please do reach me.

This is a very bad news both for PLUG and whole FOSS community. We have lost a very active FOSS enthusiast.

Just wanted to share a screenshot of a new Note taking app that I'm creating. It is a mix of a mockup + something that is already done. The top icons are temporary. When complete this app would sync completely with evernote. Any suggestions / ideas.

Most of the basic stuff like webkit, sqlite, all major callbacks is already done.

You may have wondered why virtual memory, so popularin the operating systems of the 1960s and 1970s, was not present in the personal-computer operating systems of the 1980s. The pundits of the microcomputerrevolution proclaimed bravely that personal computers would not succumb to the diseases of the large commercial operating systems; the personalcomputer would be simple, fast, and cheap. Bill Gates, who once said that no user of a personal computer would ever need more than 640K of main memory, brought outMicrosoft DOS in 1982 without most of the common operating system functions, including virtual memory. Overtime, however, programmers of personal computers encounteredexactly the same programming problems as their predecessors in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. That put pressure on the major PC operating system makers (Apple,Microsoft, and IBM) to add multiprogramming and virtual memory to their operating systems. These makers were able to respond positively because the major chip buildershad neverlost faith;Intel offered virtual memory and cache in its 80386 chip in 1985; and Motorola did likewise in its 68020 chip. Apple offered multiprogramming initsMultiFinder and virtual memory in its System 6 operating system. Microsoft offered multiprogramming in Windows 3.1 and virtual memory in Windows 95. IBM offeredmultiprogramming and virtual memory in OS/2.
