Monday Move Tip - Check Your Finances: Clean up your credit report, pay down your debt, and consider what expenses you will have to pay for your new home such as property taxes and insurance on top of the mortgage payments and interest. Then, create a realistic financial list on what you can pay for the home, the type of mortgage you can afford and what monthly budget you have to meet. #MovingTips

Monday Move Tip - The busy season for moving companies falls within the summer months, as most people prefer to move while the weather is mild and the chance of snowstorms are low. However, since demand is high during this time, moving services tend to be more expensive. If you can’t afford the high cost during the busy season, you might consider renting a truck and recruiting friends and family to be helpers. Yet, if you’re moving from a very large home with multiple rooms of furniture and antiques, spending the extra money to hire a mover will be worth it. #MovingTips

Moving Safety Tips

Moving can be a chaotic, expensive, and if you’re not careful, a painful experience. Hiring professional movers is always advised, as they are trained and accustomed to performing these sometimes complicated and dangerous moving tasks on the daily basis. However if you decide to do it yourself, you will need to plan extensively and take necessary precautions to ensure a successful, injury-free relocation process. If you don’t take the proper precautions and follow these moving safety tips, you can put yourself at risk for serious injuries such as falls, pulled muscles or broken bones.

Stretch

Do some light stretching exercises before you begin hauling your furniture and boxes out to the moving truck. This will relax your muscles and get them ready for the heavy lifting.

Know your limit

Never take on more than you can handle, if something feels too heavy to lift safely, then it probably is. It is always best to ask for assistance than risk an injury that will jeopardize the entire moving process. All it takes is one slip or trip, and you could break a bone.

Use moving tools

Dollies, hand trucks and moving straps can all make lifting and carrying heavy items and furniture much easier. You can rent these tools from any moving supply retailer.

Pack correctly

Do not over pack your boxes; this may make them too heavy and difficult to handle potentially damaging items inside and or causing injury to the handler. Using similarly sized and weighted boxes makes stacking for hauling to the truck and packing into the truck much easier and simpler. For more information on packing please read our helpful tips here.

Lift properly

When lifting a box or piece of furniture, always spread your legs apart and bend at the knees, never at the waist. Always keep your back straight and upright and lift with your legs, not with your back. Stand up slowly and hold the item close to your body while carrying it. If you have to turn, turn with your feet not your hips.

Ask friends/family for help

Enlisting the help of a few friends or extended family members to lighten the load is a great way to avoid injuries on moving day. Provide food and beverages to keep them fed, hydrated and happy.

Packing electronic equipment does require patience, planning and the right packing material. It is also important to keep track of all the knobs, wires and plugs which will need to be reconnected after the move. Never pack more than one heavy electronic item in one box and label which side is up.

Monday Move Tip - To avoid any difficulties or delays the day of your move, try and select a date when no one else is moving in or out of your building. This may leave you the ability to reserve a service elevator for yourself and avoid delays caused by multiple movers coming in and out. #NYCMoving #MovingTips

Moving With The Elderly

The experience of moving with the elderly loved one can be stressful. Trauma can be minimized with expertise to guide the transition and reduce the disruption caused by change. Seniors can be emotionally vested in the home they’re leaving. It’s expected that there will be sadness and apprehension about the move. There are a few different strategies to help alleviate stress when moving with the elderly loved ones.

The sooner you start preparing your loved one for their move the better. This is particularly true if they are downsizing into a smaller home. There are many emotional decisions for them to make. They probably don’t move as quickly (physically or mentally) as they used to. Giving them plenty of time will save frustration for everyone. Ideally, beginning preparations a few months in advance is vital in avoiding RSS. Giving them adequate time to get used to the fact that they’re moving from a home they have probably cherished for many years. Enlisting the help of professional movers is a colossal step for ensuring a smooth and stress-free relocation process. They will load everything, deliver to its destination and put things in place, offering comfort both to you and your loved ones. Not all moving companies are the same. Therefore be sure to research your top three candidates. Choosing one that will best suit your loved ones needs. Set aside time to go through different areas of the house together to pack and clear out the rooms. Ideally, this should be done over a period of time. On separate occasions rather than setting aside a one-time event to achieve it all. Deciding what to keep, toss, donate or sell can be very stressful and confusing for the elderly. Chances are there is sentimental value attached to many items precious to them and may take time to emotionally let go of something that no longer serves purpose or if there is simply no room for it in the new home. This will allow the process of clearing and packing to be achieved calmly and positively without exhaustion, panic and frayed tempers.

Explain how the day will go. A difficult part of growing old is that often we have less and less control over the events going on around us. The better you can prepare them by explaining how the day will go, what time the movers will arrive, etc., the easier it will be for them to prepare themselves for all the activity of moving day. Reassure them about the safety of their goods and point out the positives of their new home.

Prior to the relocation day, be sure to do your homework for finding new social outlets, such as nearby senior centers, it can help smooth their transition. Changing doctors, drug stores, grocery stores and even hairdressers can be particularly stressful for the elderly; therefore finding replacements prior to the move can prove to be essential.

When setting aside items to take along instead of packing for the movers (like a change of clothes and toiletries), add a few small, precious items (a framed photo, something of sentimental value). That way, they will have the comfort of those items right away when they arrive at their new home.

Acquiring an Estimate for your Move

When planning your move, choosing a reputable moving company is one of the initial and most important steps you will take in your relocation process. There are many companies to choose from that appear legitimate and offer competitive prices. Read our tips on how to choose the right moving company that will work for you.

The next step is shopping around for an estimate to insure you receive the most accurate and reasonable quote on your move. The cardinal rule here is to be wary of very low estimates and ask all and any questions that you may have. Some companies lure customers with promising incentives to get a contract. If you come across a company from your list that offers much lower rates than their competitors, proceed with caution. The cost of your move will closely reflect on the quality of your move. You may be sacrificing other things that are actually more important, such as getting your valued possessions moved and delivered safely without damage. They are worth many times more than the cost of your move, both in monetary and sentimental value.

You can acquire a moving estimate in two ways, over the phone or with the company sending a rep to assess your load prior to giving you a quote. The cost of a move is based on many factors: weight, distance, length of time and the manpower involved. Most companies offer two types of estimates. A non-binding estimate is an approximation of the cost for your move, based on the estimated weight of the shipment and accessorial services requested. A binding estimate is an exact cost for moving services and your final charges will not increase.

You may benefit more from a phone estimate if you are moving locally and don’t have many items to move or perhaps yours is a last minute move. A reputable moving company is not out to get you, but rather, to provide you with the best moving experience they can, so you will be inclined to use their services again and recommend them to your friends, relatives and neighbors. Therefore, given the right circumstances, you can trust an over the phone estimate to be accurate and precise. You must however provide all items that are going to be moved as accurately and true to your knowledge as possible. Concealing such information in hopes of a lower estimate will just result in more frustration for you and the movers.

If you are moving a large home or relocating to another city, you may want to ask for an in-home estimate. An in-home moving estimate is a free service provided by most reputable moving companies. Expert estimators will be sent to your location to complete an evaluation of all of your items, they will do a walk-through and go through each room very carefully, often making notes of what is going to be included in the move and estimating the total weight of the shipment based on what the customer is going to be moving. If you know that items you plan to move are out of view, be sure to point them. From this estimation, and careful surveying of the house, the movers are then able to arrive at an initial price that the estimate the move will cost based on all of the factors involved.
