thanks will, that sounds interesting. her serious boyfriend is an android guy. i could switch in a minute, if things "just work" for the most part in an elegant way... sort of related: i still noodle around w/ win 10 on my surface pro, and just find the whole win 10 experience kind of messy, a mash up of old and new ways. very very un apple/

Just in case anyone is still fence-sitting on this whole SSD thing. I have a terabyte SSD the size of a matchbook that's awesome.

Even for mainstream users, it's not hard to tell the differences between using a PC that has its OS installed on a solid-state drive versus a mechanical hard drive. With an SSD, the OS will start up faster, while apps and multi-tasking won't bring certain processes to an absolute crawl. With SSD pricing where it is right now, it's easy to

Love the speed increase with SSD. I have an undersized SSD in my MBP – 250GB. Their upgrade cost wasn't worth it at the time. Then I have another 250GB in a flush-fit SD card, which has been fine for music, movies, and source files.

hmm. a friend of mine who's forever had a flip phone. I've texted him many times and the texts were green. this am, after probably 2 months I sent him a text (I've not received any from him either), and it was blue.

how did my iPhone know he has a new iPhone?

Glad to see two of the largest U.S. banks really investing in mobile payments and supporting Android Pay and Apple Pay both equally.
Apple Pay is convenient, but cash is king. Someday soon they could join forces.

what's a gently used iPhone 6 supposed to cost these days? need one for the wife. 16 gb, for t-mo. i checked in w/ a place here in cola, they wanted 450 for a "new" one (when i said, "new new? how can you sell it at that price when apple sells for whatever they charge?" he just stared at me. ebay and CL seem to be more like 300. i'm not averse to ebay, if they have a good rating. and local CL, i've been burned one time and it worked out well one time.

any locals want to sell?

wow, gazelle is only offering $160 for a flawless 6 16gb, and $170 for a 64gb. but amazon says about $260. quite a discrepancy.

Facebook has plotted the degrees of separation of everyone using their service. I'm currently at 3.32.
In honor of Friends Day, we've recalculated the classic 'Six degrees of separation' statistic for everyone who uses Facebook and determined that the number is actually 3.57. Each person in the world (at least among the 1.55 billion people active on Facebook) is connected to every other person by an average of three and a half steps.

Anyone making or mixing digital music here? What tools do you prefer?

I haven't done much with music other than obsessively listen to it for years. I DJed some and made mixtapes in the vinyl era. Then I made mix CDs in the software era, but nothing in 10+ years. Can't recall what DJ software I was using, but it was obviously very primitive compared to today.

I've been exploring Logic Pro, Reason, Ableton, and djay Pro the last couple weeks. I'm making beats, remixing, and playing home DJ to start. My next move is to learn Ableton Live. Their Push 2 controller looks like fun.

so if you want to produce original music Ableton is the standard right now.

if you want to do stuff with decks that is like being a vinyl DJ, then Traktor and Serato are the beasts to behold.
