...And suddenly David and Katie get 1,000 new friend requests on FB. :D Closed FB groups are a little hard to maintain. I run a few and it's tricky -- who do you let join, should it be secret or closed, do you only allow friends of current members for a while, do you give them a speakeasy-style password via the podcast, what do you do about inappropriate behavior, do you define good behavior first for everyone, etc. Then there are those wonderful gray areas -- like if someone joins who isn't really a Mac fan, makes crazy comments, then says "I wasn't slamming Mac, I just think PC is better!" I don't spend a LOT of time on FB but I'm willing to help whenever possible. Best of luck on the new adventure! Thanks for the podcast and the forums.

I guess most of the people here know this?
Even though these tools are aimed at developers they do include some that should be of some use to almost any Mac user.

Simple photos question. My iPhone and Mac Photos are backed up to iCloud. I want to delete a bunch and not see them anywhere. If I delete them in Photos on my Mac, will they be gone from iCloud and my phone? Thanks!

Thanks. I found that if I deleted them and deleted the "recently deleted," they disappeared from all devices.

How do I use Workflow to send one message(text) & photo to multiple people in separate threads?

Pretty sure I heard this was possible on Show 358.

Sounds GREAT! .... I have not experimented with the Workflow app at all --- Didn't seem to have any functionality I needed.

I did some search engine looking and searched within the app. No luck yet (I'm traveling and my search was not very thorough).

Listening to the podcast while driving (solo) and it's a bit hard to take notes and drive at the same time (I did also look at the show notes... didn't see a ref.).

I will say, just looking at the results from my search in the app -- There are a LOT more actions available than when I first looked at it -- Any favorites Mac Power Users wish to point out?

Thank you!

Thank you!! I didn't get to it until I was done with my trip (driving all the time!); but that looks really useful! Thanks again!

Questions  -

I am looking for recommendations about a home NAS.

1. The current situation: 2 Mac laptops, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, no desktop; 1 TV with attached Apple TV (3rd gen) and Amazon FireStick; heavy photography interest, although current collection only runs ~240GB. Backups to a few small, portable, 1 and 2 GB drives, locally, not over network. Router is aging but still kicking Airport Extreme.

2. Goal: archiving/storage of photos and everything else (perhaps 3GB altogether).

3. If possible: access from outside home network; integration with Dropbox/Amazon Photos; photo sharing with family.

4: Possibilities considered so far: Seagate Personal Cloud; WD Cloud; Buffalo Linkstation; Synology. I note that Seagate and Synology include apps, including Wordpress installations that I could use for sharing photo albums with family.

At this time, I would like to put less than $300 US into the whole thing. Otherwise, I'll just stay with small external HDDs.

Thanks in advance!

+Philip Roberts yer freenas is a good option if you have an old box but the power is a consideration, if its an old machine it might be 100W to 150W on all the time, the Pi has a very low power footprint so after a year of running time I would recon the 30Euros on the Pi will most likely save you money in the end also as +Philip Roberts points out old boxes tend to have fans etc so you skill all the noice with a Pi or with a pro solution like Synology.

A friend of mine has a Pi connected to a small UPS (an external phone battery) this gives him realy cheap protection in the case of a power fail. It takes some extra config to make the linux install be happy with the concept of the main HDs being lost but set up write as long as the system's ram is powered when power returners the Pi will finish any pending writes to the disks.

PDF Editing on iOS question.

Is this scenario possible:

Receive a PDF via email.
Save that PDF to an iCloud folder.
Edit that PDF using something like PDF Expert.
Save those edits.
Have that updated PDF accessible by all your iOS devices.

Essentially, can you simply edit a file that sits on iCloud or do you have to first download it to your iOS device, make changes, then copy/upload it back to iCloud?

I don't know why this is baffling me so much.

+Bojan Dordevic Yes that was quite a revelation to me as well! So far the system has been solid in my testing. I'll report back new updates and such. I'll probably also do one for macOS Server as well!

Glad to learn about the OmniFocus project templates. Will probably be returning to OmniFocus for my personal task manager. At work we have to use Wunderlist. Anybody know of any integrations between the two--easy ways to set up a project in one and have its tasks and subtasks automatically copied to the other? For just certain projects, not all?

I"m not yet enough of a Workflow user to know how to set a complex one up on my own. It does seem like it should be do-able, but i didn't find any pre-existing ones for that pair of apps in the Gallery. I'll have to delve into it more.

can someone give me the current best mailbox behaviors settings for gmail using apple mail. I sometimes generate dozens of drafts which don't get deleted until I find them and delete them myself. Every time I search for settings I get different suggestions so I'm not sure what to use.

+Kevin Sadler Yep. This is the advice on Google's own setup pages, if I recall... though to be honest, I still store my Drafts on their servers and don't have this problem.

OmniFocus/Reminders/Siri Question -

I use Siri on the iPhone to put things in my OmniFocus inbox throughout the day -- "Hey Siri, remind me to buy milk on the way home this evening." Works fine. OmniFocus grabs the reminder from iOS and it disappears from Reminders so it will only appear in the OmniFocus Inbox. Now that I'm using Sierra on the Mac, I wanted to try the same thing.

I click the Siri icon and say "Remind me to buy milk on the way home." It goes to Mac Reminders, which syncs to the iPhone reminders, then disappears from iPhone Reminders, and appears in the OmniFocus Inbox where I want it. The catch is the Mac Reminders list still shows it as an available task. Am I missing something, or is it just the nature of the workflow at this point? Apparently the Mac Reminders App doesn't sync back from the iPhone? Or was it transferred to a list on the phone that doesn't exist on the Mac?

It happens very quickly; not sure if it gets crossed-off as complete or gets moved to another list and marked complete. Tried to find where it goes this morning and didn't have any luck.

Specials on software. I'm not affiliated with any of these developers, just wanted to pass this on, in case anyone has an interest.

Awesome, thanks! I was just looking at all the usual suspects for software bundles yesterday and it seemed the well had run dry for this time of year. This particular site has a few things I've been trying and thinking about purchasing in the past couple weeks.

Questions  -

Cloud-based storage question -- I'd love to jump over to using a full/paid 1TB Dropbox account, but I already have 1 TB of storage available on OneDrive because of an existing and necessary Office365 subscription. Plus I'm sharing that subscription with a family member for free, and that person gets 1TB as well with no extra charge as part of the package.

If I were to move to Dropbox Plus/Pro I would need to pay for two pro-level users in addition to the non-negotiable Office365 subscription, which wouldn't make sense. Since the OneDrive app for Mac is awful and seems to show no signs of improving, I use Hazel to maintain the folders in OneDrive on a PC laptop in my office via a mapped network drive. It's kinda slow and klugy though, both machines need to be on and networked, and it takes several clicks to get anywhere. Would prefer something more direct that would work more like the Dropbox app does, and like the OneDrive app is supposed to work.

Does anyone use and recommend a 3rd-party app to sync OneDrive or other cloud-based storage systems? I bought CommanderOne Pro but it's a bit like a web page running through Fluid 2, rather than an actual local application. Suggestions or workarounds?

+Liam Greenwood Didn't know about the preview -- checking it out now, thanks! Previous issue was sync conflicts; some folders would never sync correctly even after careful uninstalls/reinstalls. Since the majority of Mac Store reviewers agreed, I was pretty sure it wasn't just me. Thanks for the tip!

Workflows  -

Could anyone please recommend an approach for the following workflow challenge with TextExpander?

I want to create a snippet where the content is variable. When entered the snippet would grab whatever text is in a fixed field. The field itself would be constant, always in the same file in the same folder on my Mac. For instance, a cell in an Excel workbook. But the content would change from time to time. Entering the TE abbreviation would always mean that the most current content would be delivered.

I'm open to any and all suggestions and it doesn't have to be a TE solution. I just thought that might be a good place to start.

Thanks,

Richard

I think a TE snippet can expand to a shell script or a JavaScript script. So that should give a way to return the contents of a file

I'm on a 13' Mid-2013 MacBook Air running Mac OS Sierra 10.12.2.

Safari continues to show high levels of usage on CPU constantly throughout a browsing session. It continually hovers around 100% of CPU and makes the fans in the MacBook Air spin up.

I have taken a screenshot from Activity Monitor where you can see more info. Can anyone help me?

Cheers. I tried a couple but they were a bit clunky - was wondering if anyone was using something they liked.

The 'Focus' Mac app looks slick and to have solved some of those things - any others?

Finally got the ScanSnap ix500 istalled and running! Really nice, way better than my HP Officejet which keeps losing the ability to scan to the computer.

I have a question though. Is there any way I can put a pile of documents in the scanner, and have the software create separate PDFs for the different documents.

+Jack Forbush - well, I know there is software that can do that kind of thing (eg Google and it's ilk), but I thought it was unlikely that desktop software was there yet :-)

Is anyone using Spark mail on the Mac and iOS ? How does it stack up against default mail apps? Any glitches? And is there a feature to delay sending a message on Mac and/or iOS? Thanks!

I like the Spark interface and use it, but, in addition to what's been said above, the inability to link to a message via message ID is a bummer.
