Frost Free
Te Awa Winery frost fan, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

We have had a warm run of weather over the last couple of weeks, caused by the northwesterly flow of the winds we have been getting.  This wind has also helped to create some very colourful sunsets and sunrises like this sunrise yesterday morning down at Te Awa Winery.

The 'windmill' in shot is a fan which is turned on (along with a whole lot more) when the conditions are right for a frost to form on the delicate grape vines in winter, and it helps to disturb/move the air above the vines and therefore stop the frost from forming.  A localised form of climate change if you like.

Obviously frost was not a problem yesterday at 5:30am when I was wandering around in shorts and a t-shirt, taking this photo in 20°C.

Island in a stream
Mt Kahuranaki floating above the mist of the Tuki Tuki Valley, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

This is another shot from Christmas morning 2016, looking across the Tuki Tuki Valley from Te Mata Peak towards Mt Kahuranaki.  This is the only time I can remember seeing mist in the valley in the middle of summer.

My friends tell me a different story
Ahuriri Estuary, Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

One night when we were out shooting a stunning sunset this couple kindly walked through my shot.  Normally I don't have people in my landscape photos but this time I didn't mind, and shot off a few frames as they walked towards me.

Once they realised I had photographed them they stopped and chatted, and I even sent them a copy of this photo straight from my camera (love those Fujifilm cameras with wifi); they didn't respond so I don't know if they ever got this photo. So Noa / Barni2468 from Israel if you happen to be following my social media feeds, this is you!

Different Times, Different Light: Scinde Building
Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

A few years ago, when I was starting out in photography, I took some photos of some of the Art Deco buildings that Napier is famous for, and titled the collection "In Different Light".

I have often thought about carrying on that collection, or more accurately, starting the collection again, using what I have learned in those years to improve on them.

So I went out the other night to take photos of some of the buildings at sunset, and decided I would start with the building that I currently spend a fair bit of time in working at Eva Bradley Photography: the "Scinde Building".  While I was shooting this shot I thought it would be nice to have a collection of images that showed the buildings in a more original state, without the trimmings of a modern world such as parking meters, signage etc.

So this is the first image in my "Different Times, Different Light" series, showing Art Deco buildings as they might have looked in Art Deco times.

Really early one Sunday morning at the Cathedral
Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

This is an image looking over Napier City during the New Years fireworks display for 2017.  I carried 2 camera setups up the track to this spot, and I setup both cameras to take continuous shots during the display.  This camera (D800) was shooting this wide shot while the other (Fujifilm X-E2) was shooting tighter on the fireworks.  This allowed me to sit and enjoy the fireworks display as well as shooting it, as once I had framed my shots I just triggered the remote releases and let them shoot away.

This image is a combination 5 photos, combining various explosions from the display, blended in Photoshop.

5 images, each one D800, ISO100, f8, 10sec, 14mm
Processed in Lightroom and Blended in Photoshop
