Like a Jazz Quartet
Lake Tutira, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

When you get up early to shoot the sunrise and all you get is mist, you better be ready to shoot something else.

In this case I found some reeds growing near the edge of the lake, so on went the gumboots and out I went

Swan Eye
Black Swan in the mist, Lake Tutira, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Another calm, misty predawn up at Lake Tutira, and this Black Swan came to check out what we were doing (and have a hiss at me as well for no reason).

The Hopetoun Falls is a waterfall across the Aire River that is located in The Otways region of Victoria, Australia. For a brief moment of time, the sun was out and created some lovely rays of sun in the mist above the waterfall.

Parked
Ahuriri, Napier, New Zealand

I was out testing my new lens the other evening and saw this nice simple silhouette against the setting sun.

The lens is a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC, and so far I am seriously impressed with the quality of the shots, and the capability of the vibration control which allows me (and my shaky hands) to shoot at 200mm down to about 1/20 sec.

The Patient Seagull
Clive East, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

I was very lucky that my model chose to stay fairly still for a long exposure at this old drainage outfall near Clive.

Birthday Candle
Moon rising, Maraetotara River mouth, Te Awanga, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

To celebrate my birthday this year I went out with 3 talented photographers (Greg Stevens, Dylan Griffith, and Michael Schultz) to shoot the Milky Way and the moon rise at one of my favourite spots in Hawke's Bay; the Maraetotara River mouth on the coast of Hawke Bay.

This is an amazing location only 15 minutes drive from the centre of the city of Napier, which seems to have dark skies, and at the same time some low level lighting which illuminates the trees and river.

On this occasion we hung around until the moon rose over Cape Kidnappers then headed home.

This image is a single frame, with the 2/3 illuminated moon rising, and Mars (left centre, left corner of a triangle of stars) and Saturn (bottom corner of the triangle) shining brightly as well.

D800, ISO100, f3.2, 15sec, 14mm

I discovered the Cardrona Hotel when I first came to Wanaka to ski in the 1980's so my image is of arriving early afternoon at the end of a hard day skiing for some R&R before returning to our lodge. My skiing days are over but I stop at this iconic travellers rest is still a must when I travel this way.

Storm Water 6
Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Another from my ongoing series of shots taken from a storm water outlet on the beach of Napier.  This shot is from this mornings stunningly colourful sunrise.

It is a 10½ minute exposure using a Lee Big Stopper 10 Stop ND filter and started about 30 minutes before sunrise.

Autumn colours at Lake Te Koutu , early morning in Cambridge New Zealand .

The Cambridge Domain Board was formed in 1880 to plant trees and beautify Lake Te Koutu and surrounds. Over the years this work has continued and today offers a tranquil spot in the middle of Cambridge.
