Nice numbers.

Ubuntu is the most used Linux desktop operating system, but that might not be all that transparent, so we would also like to present some interesting figures, like the number of Windows users that download Ubuntu every day.

Laptop running Ubuntu 14.04, both Servers running Ubuntu and running solidly with only the odd config error causing hiccups. Love Ubuntu for bringing me fully into the Linux world

+Fernando Méndez González what version of the kernel do you need? Freya is planned to ship with 3.16.

That graphic is wrong. The 2015 xps 13 has a different looking chassis to the previous 13 or the current xps 15

So, completely independent from each other, both me and the creator of the app in the recent OMG post - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/04/ambient-noise-player-app-for-ubuntu-linux - managed to create an extremely similar application at around the same time. :O

The source code for my app is up at https://github.com/xyl0n/acoustics (Unfortunately, there's no nice packaged version like in the pretty awesome app featured on OMG...yet.) Please note that there's also a few bugs, since the software is quite new.

What I've been working on for the past few days -
It's a 350 line python script that's basically a clone of the website I shared earlier (http://asoftmurmur.com) but presumably less polished. The idea is that it plays sounds in the background for concentration etc.

It currently only has the 6 sounds shown, but it has an app indicator (shown in the bottom left) so you can close the window and keep it running. It also remembers the volumes that you set for the sounds.

All sounds used are public domain or CC.

Awesome deal!  Are you using the same source for the sounds as Ambient?

While many computer manufacturers are in a race to the bottom -- both in price and quality -- some makers continue to produce reliable high-quality machines. One of these manufacturers is System76. If you aren't familiar, it manufactures and sells desktops and laptops running the Ubuntu operating system. In other words, Linux fans can buy one of these machines and have it running the Linux distro out of the box -- no need to format the drive to r...

Let's play with the Scaleway trial!

Scaleway (https://www.scaleway.com/) just announced that they are offering very cheap cloud servers (VPS) that are based on ARM hardware. They have actually partnered with Canonical as it says at https://insights.ubuntu.com/2015/04/02/ubuntu-arm-and-the-public-cloud/

If you click the link below, you get the option to try for free a cloud server for 15 minutes. It has full functionality and all. The image is running Ubuntu 14.10, Linux kernel 3.17, 20GB disk space.

So,
1. Click the link below to start your free 15-minute ride on the clouds.
2. Update packages (sudo apt-get update)
3. Install a webserver and access it from the public IP address that is given, using your browser.
4. Install lsof and then check what connections are established with lsof -i.
5. Read /proc/cpuinfo for the CPU details.
6. Read dmesg to figure out technical issues.
7. Connect with SSH from your Ubuntu computer (ssh ubuntu@CLOUDIPADDRESS).
8. Create a helloworld file (/var/www/index.html) for your web server.
9. Run wget http://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.ubuntu.com/releases/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso* to test the download speeds. Install *axel then run *axel http://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.ubuntu.com/releases/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso* to check again the download speeds.
10. Install a CLI IRC client and connect to Freenode. Ask a friend to visit your web server. Check the logs to verify the visit.

Instant Cloud let you try the Scaleway C1 server. Scaleway is the first IaaS provider worldwide to offer an ARM based cloud.

+Nick Floros Scaleway uses the Marvell Armada 370/XP SoC, so if you want to buy the same hardware, you can get a developer board with the same SoC.

However, there are several other options for developer boards that come with an ARM SoC, and you can probably buy at a lower price. Some have a feature to connect a SATA disk, etc. Look out of ARM developer boards.
