Library of Congress has an online digital collection of American Vaudeville and Popular Entertainment from 1870-1920! Here is a link to some of the digitized playbooks - there's even scripts, film clips, and sound recordings of some of the acts!

It reminded me a lot of the world of Tipping the Velvet and helped me imagine what the theater world was like.

Enjoy!

About halfway and liking it too.  Definitely something I would never have picked up on my own which is exactly why I like being part of this group. It's good to read outside my favorite zone.

Definitely enjoyed this one. Loved how well the romance part was handled, because of how determined and skilled at seduction Theran was. It resulted in some mouth watering sexy-times that kept me interested in the story-line.
The world-building kind of reminded me of Terry Prachett's style.I'd love to read more from this series. That being said:
It felt like a more YA book, but in a good way. Felt good to read something 'lighter' after last month's ghosts and terraformation.
The conclusion to the relationship after all the tension built during the tournament seemed a little too underwhelming and obvious. Theran's reaction appeared very  immature for a 900-something vampire, I'd expected him to calm down and want to at least close the relationship in private and say he was sorry for exploding during the fight. The way it happened, it kinda felt too abrupt a change of pace and I was sorry to miss out on the crown ceremony and Caspian relinquishing his prize.
Same could be said for the conclusion as a whole - the author seems to have fast-tracked Bettina's growth and skip the consequences of the tournament, I appreciated how artsy she was, but I couldn't connect with her as much as I would've liked.
I could also point out Theran was kind of a Mr Perfect - rich self-confident scholar with mastery in assassination. However he worked for me, and was one of the biggest assets of the book.

So glad i was able to get Ghost Planet done in time for tonights hangout. I thought the concept was really cool, but did anyone else have a problem with the way the book was written? It seemed a bit too direct to me. Anyone?

When I met up with some girls in Portland, we all felt the same way.  We wanted it to be broken into three books and expanded.  If I remember right, this was a first time novel for the author so I get that she probably didn't have the luxury of multiple books.  Better to get the whole story out then leave it with no ending if they never gave her a second book.

How did everyone do on the July books?

I unfortunately have been caught up in work and SDCC stuff so July wasn't much of a reading month for me.

Better to read not just The Fire Lord's Lover, but all three of Kathryne Kennedy's books in this series.  A better payoff at the end.

I liked the heroine from the second book a lot. And the illusions that the guy produced in the third were amazing - gardens, dragons etc.

How's everyone coming along with this month's reading?  I just finished Fire Lord and have decided to pass on the alt in favor of some books I've been meaning to read.
