Since the page I’m posting too is intended for DMs, and since Outlaws of the Iron Route is almost two years old now it feels strange to add spoilers.. but in the interest of preserving A Sense of Wonder..
SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER.. there Wonder preserved!

I ran DDEX01-09 Outlaws of the Iron Route on Friday Night. I’ve been running this adventure periodically since it was first released and Its never lived up to it’s promise. Between the Riot, Grimshackle Prison, Walharrow, the meeting at King’s Pyre, and the Orc raid, four hours is seldom enough time for a group to complete the adventure.

The editing of this adventure leaves a lot to be desired. On first (and second, and third) read, the story is confused, and undirected. This is definitely NOT an adventure that a DM would want to run cold with only a half-hour to skim beforehand.

To run Outlaws as a four hour adventure, replace the Riot and Grimshackle Jail with a mission given directly from Braden Yil working on behalf of House Cadorna. He explains the following;

* Caravans on the Iron Route have been plagued by bandits two groups in particular have been particularly troublesome. The Grey Patriots and The Claws of Tiamat
* In addition to the 100 gp bounty for Sahnd Krulek, the leader of the Grey Patriots, offered by the Lord Regent of Phlan, House Cadrona is willing to pay a 75 gp bounty
* House Cadrona also offers a 75gp bounty for the “Chosen of Tiamat”, the Dragonborn Sorceress Jerala
* If characters wish to bargain with Braden Yil for a richer bounty. One character can attempt a DC 15 Charisma (Persuasion) check. Success will mean they have talked Braden up to 100 gp for each Bandit Leader.
* Information from a recently captured Grey Patriot known as Rahene has revealed the gangs are meeting at a ruin known as King’s Pyre to discuss a truce between them. Both gang leaders will be there in just a day or two.
* Braden Yil will arrange for a boat to ferry the characters to King’s Pyre so they can capture Sahnd Krulek and Jeralla.

The Factions have the following missions for their Agents;
i. The Lords’ Alliance is searching for the necklace named the Heart of Myth Drannor
ii. The Zhentarim wants Sahnd Krulek returned to Phlan alive
iii. The Order of the Gauntlet wants to find a missing group of Agents who were investigating the “Claws of Tiamat”
iv. The Harpers are looking for Sharrak, a Cult of the Dragon spy among the “Claws of Tiamat”
v. The Emerald Enclave wants to rescue the Owlbear companion of a local Druid that was captured by the Claws of Tiamat.
Once the introduction is completed, start the adventure at Part 3. Remember, the characters’ goal, and their rewards for the Adventure all revolve around the events during the truce negotiations and the bounties on Sahnd Krulek and Jeralla. Because the events at King’s Pyre are very fluid, and can react to the characters’ actions, it is important to remind the players of the adventure goal if they get distracted.

Launch Part 4, the Orc Assault either when the tension slows down or as a sudden twist to the climax.

I do enjoy the adventure part at Grimshackle Jail and the fight with Walharrow, but the time needed to do that part of the adventure justice and have enough time remaining for the players to accomplish their goals at Kings Pyre is just too much. If you wish to run Outlaws of the Iron Route as written, including the riot and Grimshackle Jail, schedule 8 hours and take a breather between Parts 2 and 3.

I will also add that after 3 years there are still DMs and players who are new to the #DDAL and the #AL and that is why the SPOILERS tags are needed. This page is meant for general AL players and organizers of all kinds. Not just Dungeon Masters. The DMs have their own group.

quick qeustion i hope it can be answered within 2 hours :P in DDal-12/13 The raven there is a time limit off 32 hours of travel (part 1) but in part after 3 days an encounter happens at some point (72 hours) does the 32 hour only apply to traveling time (assuming 8 hours of travel per day) or is the time limit 96 hours (4 days) before bad stuff happens in the overall story arc trying not to spoiler to much here

No, +Jeroen Caspers, this is a 32 hour limit as the ritual is starting in 32 hours. You and your party must get there before the ritual begins to stop it. In part it talks about travel time and such. It also mentions something about whether or not the party survives the night. So by the time you reach Part 3 at most 32 has passed but it also mentions the possibilty of getting there in 30 hours.

I have a quick question regarding DM Rewards.

I ran a group through the first three parts of Great Upheaval yesterday. It took four hours to do. How do I calculate the experience reward for this?

Ask the store's game organizor as they should have recieved a copy of AGU with a logsheet showing the milestone rewards.

If you are asking for yourself as a DM it doesn't matter how far the party got in the adventure, your xp and gold is earned by the hour in two and four hour blocks, as descriped on page 7 of the ALDMG.

Dungeon Masters running hardcover adventures published by Wizards of the Coast receive XP for every session, calculated in two-hour blocks according to the average party level for the session. This is roughly equivalent to the D&D Adventurers League rewards above. Downtime rewards for both D&D Adventurers League adventures and the hardcover adventures is 5 days for every 2 hours of play. The Dungeon Master’s character receives a number of gp equal to half the XP earned for each session, whether running a D&D Adventurers League adventure or a hardcover adventure.

Hello all,

I just had a quick question about a bardic class feature:

MAGICAL SECRETS By 10th leveI,you have plundered magical knowledge from a wide spectrum of disciplines. Choose two spells from any class, including this one. Aspell you choose must be Dfa levei you can cast, as shown on the Bard table, or a cantrip. The chosen spells count as bard spells for you and are included in the number in the Spells Known column Df the Bard table. Vou learn two additional spells from any class at 14th leveI and again at 18th leveI.

Once you choose the class to take the spells from is it locked in stone? Or is it possible to chose a different class each time?

Thank you for the help!

Agreed, some of the best spells were from the Paladin and Ranger lists, since you would normally only have access to them at much higher levels.

About this community

See below for D&D AL Links. At the core of the new D&D Organized Play experience is the D&D Adventurers League. Essentially, we’ve given the system a name, because we wanted to emphasize the connected nature of our public play programs. For the first time, we’ll have our entire public play taking place in the same ongoing D&D campaign. As a player, you’ll create a character for the D&D Adventurers League. You’ll be using the same rules to play at a convention, a store, or any sort of public event. There will be a D&D Adventurers League Player’s Guide available to let you know how it all comes together. Through the different programs, the D&D Adventurers League will be inviting to casual D&D players, experienced D&D players, and players looking for ways in which their characters can impact the campaign world. We want players to find the play that best fits them, and enjoy playing for years to come. As a Dungeon Master, the D&D Adventurers League is a great way to run fun adventures that involve a minimum of prep work. We’ll find ways to reward you for your time and effort through the various programs, and there will be additional support and opportunities to showcase your skills. As an organizer (either in-store or at conventions), you’ll find that the D&D Adventurers League is a great way to keep your players engaged. There will be fresh content available on a regular basis (mostly monthly), ensuring that there’s always something new around the corner. Here's a big ol' list of links that should help you out. Find and join your regional page for more localized D&D Adventurers League play and information. Regional Links: http://dndadventurersleague.org/regional-pages/

Hi all

I'm finally about to start a Adventure League Season.
Now my question:
Which Beginner Quest do you recommend? Mines of Phandelver or the Great Upheaval?
We have a mix of 2 exp. players and 2 new players.

Oh and any registration or so required to be fully AL worthy?

Thx for your help.
Really looking forward to dive into DnD again :)

I agree with +Zingbob Co. In addition, if you want current Adventure League players to play your game they are looking for the most current adventures. I have introduced this in the store I play at and have filled 5 spots at the table more than two weeks before playing.

Time grows short to submit a game to run at Sacramento's Fall Gaming Convention ConQuest Avalon 2016!

10 Days left until Event Submissions close for ConQuest Avalon 2016!
6 weeks and a day until the doors open at Avalon!

What this means for you is that there is still time left to submit a game to the convention and still have over a month to prepare for your spotlight! We still need DMs and games in Open Roleplaying as well as DMs and GMs for Organized Play Roleplaying.

We’ve got D&D 5th, Deadlands Reloaded, Star Trek (West End Games d6 mod), 1st Edition AD&D, Call of Cthulhu, Adventures in Middle Earth, and Star Wars: Age of Rebellion already submitted in Open Roleplaying and we have room for more!

Avalon guests who Pre-Register can sign-up early for any games (keep checking back! We’ll be adding games all they way up until we close Event Submissions on October 1) All the way until the doors open on November 11! And when the convention is open, guests can still sign up for games on-the-spot!

So go to the Avalon website at www.conquestavalon.com to submit an event, or pre-register for the weekend, and once you’ve done that, go to the ConQuest Avalon Warhorn at https://warhorn.net/events/conquest-avalon-2016 and register there to sign up for your favorite games early. We’ll be happy to see you at the Crowne Plaza off of Madison and I-80 in Sacramento. Stay tuned!
One of Sacramento's two tabletop gaming conventions, ConQuest Avalon features tons of role playing, board games, wargaming, as well as vendors, the Gamer's Test Lab, Sci-Fi content with SacTrek 2, and oodles of vendors! Don't miss our BBQ and yumm...

My players have never played 5e But know I am excited about running SKT and are interested in giving it a whirl.. Has anyone came up with a Player intro or Important events leading up to the very beginning of SKT?

I am looking to do a handout of a few paragraphs as a teaser or lead up to the SKT.

I plan on starting with a few random one shots with pre gens and then let them create 1st level characters of their choice and start "A Great Upheaveal"

You're welcome! And when I think back to it the relevant part is probably just that Drizzt, Bruenor and Pwent found Gauntlgrym at the same time as some villains connected to the Red Wizards. Combat ensued and a fire primordial was released or partly released (the flow of water elementals through the Arcane Brotherhood's tower in Luskan stopped), resulting in the eruption of Mount Hotenow. Neverwinter was mostly destroyed as well as many other places in the area. Necromantic things were involved too, so there was a lot of Ash Zombie problems afterwards (and still is in Thundertree in Lost Mines of Phandelver). This is probably not commonly known among potential player characters. Some things related to the control of the primordial will probably be/are part of the plot in the most recent Drizzt novel if I recall correctly (or maybe it was in some other recent one).
