Princes of the Apocalypse
Home Game question.

Preface:  I know that Hoard & Rise were stated to earn 1 renown & 10 downtime for each chapter for players and the appropriate DM rewards (xp, downtime) for running.

Understood: PotA follows a similar path for players/DMs (plus gold for DMs).

Need clarification:
PotA ch 6: Alarums & Excursions

RAW assumption: The entirety only gains 1 renown and 10 downtime (plus xp earned) for players, and only 1 DM reward if all of it is completed in a home game.

Is that correct, or did I miss something somewhere?

The content of chapter 6 is to provide filler and random encounters during the previous chapters to supplement the content of those chapters so that each chapter advances the characters by approximately one level. Must of the chapters on their own don't provide enough xp to accomplish this, hence chapter 6's content.
Also if I remember correctly, the published adventure starts at 3rd level. This is too intense for a level one group. So chapter 6 can be used to build pre-story sessions to level characters to 3 as adventurers league does not allow starting characters above first level.

As for proper documentation all that is needed is that the rewards for each session be documented, not the content of that session or its length. The chapter 6 content should be interspersed into the sessions to pad the rewards so that by the end of each chapter the party has enough xp to gain a level. The book's default difficulty assumes a group of 5 characters, average party level= chapter number+2.

SPOILERS DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU'RE A DM OR A ADMIN OF AL

Can I as a DM award more renown in encounters or certain secret missions as currently it appears like there are no secret missions or bonus renown from running princes of the apocalypse. If one of the characters does something appropriate to their faction such as rescuing defiling shrines to the princes and they're a member of the OotG then should I award them with bonus renown. Or if they're a member of the harper's and they're contacted to investigate Rundreth Manor and they complete it would that be qualification for a secret mission? I feel like overall AL is missing on some of the cool things in encounters that they could do.

I'm thinking about running a Lost Mines of Phandalver home game to help some friends catch up to my character's level in order to join me on Tuesdays Expeditions at our local FLGS. However I had some questions before I commit to it.

Is LMoP home play legal? If they are wanting to create new characters, are they only limited to the Basic Rules or can they use the PHB? And how would I go about getting certified to DM this adventure and obtain the Adventure League log and other needed materials? I already own the Starter Set.

Thank you in advance.

Didn't know if any of the 5e experts are on Google right now: I have a "detail" question - 2nd round of combat and enemies are 20 ft away in a dim light area. What happens with perception checks and then targeting attacks? (Are perception checks to attack made because it is s dim light area)....(or is it assumed it is a noticed threat or considered an unseen target?)

Also worth mentioning is that in dim light or any other situation involving things that are lightly obscured, since the players would have disadvantage on perception checks, they also have a -5 to their passive perception.

About this community

See below for D&D AL Links. At the core of the new D&D Organized Play experience is the D&D Adventurers League. Essentially, we’ve given the system a name, because we wanted to emphasize the connected nature of our public play programs. For the first time, we’ll have our entire public play taking place in the same ongoing D&D campaign. As a player, you’ll create a character for the D&D Adventurers League. You’ll be using the same rules to play at a convention, a store, or any sort of public event. There will be a D&D Adventurers League Player’s Guide available to let you know how it all comes together. Through the different programs, the D&D Adventurers League will be inviting to casual D&D players, experienced D&D players, and players looking for ways in which their characters can impact the campaign world. We want players to find the play that best fits them, and enjoy playing for years to come. As a Dungeon Master, the D&D Adventurers League is a great way to run fun adventures that involve a minimum of prep work. We’ll find ways to reward you for your time and effort through the various programs, and there will be additional support and opportunities to showcase your skills. As an organizer (either in-store or at conventions), you’ll find that the D&D Adventurers League is a great way to keep your players engaged. There will be fresh content available on a regular basis (mostly monthly), ensuring that there’s always something new around the corner. Here's a big ol' list of links that should help you out. Find and join your regional page for more localized D&D Adventurers League play and information. Regional Links: http://dndadventurersleague.org/regional-pages/

I just got done running my first D&D Adventure League convention and I was looking at ways to improve on the game play. I had many players do well on role-playing their characters but I failed to reward inspiration. What can I do to utilize that mechanic more or remember to use it?

I'm confused. I'm getting ready to start running AL at a brand new FLGS and we're being told that we can't have access to content from Wizards until I've already run several sessions. So I have to run adventures before I can run adventures?! Doesn't make sense to me. Is this correct?

D&D Encounters tonight...  Inexplicably, we're still growing our numbers.  We now have seven regular Encounters tables (35-40 players!), plus two other non-Encounters tables (also playing 5th Edition).

DDEX1-9 Outlaws of the Iron Route -- just ran this one the other day, loved the pacing - had a good mix of action and adventure, allowed the players to make choices (pretty open ended) to solve the problem.

Also love mods with handouts -- had a wanted poster, maps, etc -- well done by the writer on that!  Love to see more of that in mods.

Also had Renown for each of the factions if they found the plot hooks and were clever in solving the missions, etc.

Oh ya, and I got to put 50 or so Orc minis on the board at one point -- can't beat the faces of the players when I set those out. :p

What's your favorite? #AL_LC

Habits of Good Role Players
With so many NEW players to not only the Adventurers League, but also to D&D, I think perhaps it's a good idea to list some of your thoughts on what makes a player a Good Player.

What do you consider as the best player habits?

+David Zenz What exactly do you mean by that?

* Do players say what happens in combat when they swing their sword?
("Talbor the Mighty swings his halberd at the orc, but the orc blocks with his shield.")
* Do they supply new plot points to the DM?  ("I know a man in Iuz who collects armor!  He can help us identify this rare armor we found!")
* Do they tell the DM in their backstory how they showed up in the adventure?  ("My friend Jim and I know each other in the game because our characters are from the same village and have been adventuring together since they were 19.")

Each change the story telling in the game in different ways.
