We admit it is hard to describe the Rio de Janeiro Carnival without resorting to the typical clichés: the Sambadrome, the street parties, caipirinha, samba … but they are such strong images that we cannot avoid mentioning them when talking about the event. In this short Rio Carnival Guide we will describe some of the feelings and memories that carry the essence of Rio’s Carnival rather than just pure facts, that way you will get a different idea about the Brazilian carnival than what you will read about in a regular travel guide book.

There is no doubt the Carnival in Brazil is amazing and that the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro is the biggest party in the world! Plus it takes place in the most beautiful city I have ever known. No other city is set in such a unique natural geography between mountains and beaches and it is easy to see why they call it the ‘Marvellous City’!

Last year a Rio Carnival Group continued to parade despite all their floats and some costumes being burnt in a warehouse fire a month earlier. Although hit with this tragic event and only a few props to parade with, the group still hit the sambadrome with what they had.  It shows the passion these school groups have to keep their tradition alive even in the face of adversity.
