South Africa: Three Kruger Park rangers arrested for alleged rhino poaching

Three rangers at the Kruger National Park have been arrested on suspicion of rhino poaching.

The South African National Parks (SANPArks) has released a statement declaring the arrests a “success”.

According to the statement, the suspects were based at the Crocodile Bridge section of the park and are currently in custody for further investigation while they await their first court appearance.

Indonesia: 10 Javan slow lorises receive intensive treatment after 79 of the critically endangered primates are confiscated by police in West Java en route to China

Ten critically endangered Javan slow lorises are receiving intensive treatment at a specialist primate rehabilitation centre in West Java after being confiscated from poachers by the Majalengka Regional Police.

The lorises, which had been destined for China, had been rescued from the illegal trade in the Majalengka area of West Java and were taken to the International Animal Rescue (IAR) centre on Saturday, 12 January.

... IAR Indonesia is committed to supporting efforts to save confiscated slow lorises and return them to the wild, as well as working with law enforcement and the forestry department in West Java.

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has confirmed it has received formal notice of Japan’s decision to quit.

... “Japan’s decision to leave this long-standing, widely respected international agreement and go it alone as rogue whaler is deeply regrettable,” said Clare Perry, Oceans Campaigns Leader.

“Time and again, its claim to be whaling for scientific and not commercial purposes has been exposed as a fraud and yet rather than concede defeat in the face of the vast majority of world opinion it has instead chosen to risk becoming an international pariah on this issue.”

Canada PM Trudeau criticises Japan over whale hunting

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday took issue with Japan's plan to resume commercial whaling in a telephone call with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

According to a statement from his office, Trudeau said he "raised the important issue of whale conservation and committed to working with international partners to protect whale species."
