In the last installment we learned how to run JavaScripts over different threads by using WebWorkers. This time we'll go a few steps further and learn how to use ServiceWorkers to achieve not only separation of code but also to build up client-side proxies. These proxies are the most important building blocks of so-called Progressive Web Apps as they allow web apps to function under rough conditions like slow bandwidths or broken connections. Ser...

Question.

On a past project where I worked as the front-end AngularJS developer "alone", I wrote the app to be served to the browser not with an index.html file but index.jsp. The Java server then would dynamically create the index page served so that this entry in the file:

<%!
String environment = System.getProperty("server.env");
%>
<script>
window.appEnv = function() { return '<%= environment %>'; }
</script>

changed to this which is what the browser and Angular have:

<script>
window.appEnv = function() { return 'local'; }
</script>

With that, I could make decisions what the front-end app would do, based on which environment it was served from. For example:

$logProvider.debugEnabled(window.appEnv() === "local" || window.appEnv() === "dev");

This time around, I'm on a project "with peer developers" that argue not to do this because they haven't seen this technique before. They say, somehow, the index file being named .jsp will bite us later. But I say it's of no consequence what the filename was on the server. The index page, whatever it was called, is just a vehicle to tell the browser what scripts to load. When Angular loads, it takes over from there. There's no overlap here, I argue.

I've looked online for "the angular way" of accomplishing this. I've gleamed over a few blogs of people trying to accomplish this but their solutions are complex and involved whereas mine is so simple, you already saw it all from what code lines I pasted above.

What do you say? Please feel free to comment in addition to answering the poll, thank you.
