The New Church is the fulfillment of the New Jerusalem of the Apocalypse, in which God is worshiped as one person in Jesus Christ and one lives by the 10 commandments.

And now, for something completely different. Some very weird news with a lesson in it.

"These three apostles were fishermen, and the Lord said unto them, "Come ye after Me, and I will make you fishers of men," because "to fish" signifies to instruct natural men; for there were at that time, both within the church and outside of it, natural men who became spiritual as they received the Lord and received truths from Him." "That it may not lie hid from any one how the case is with the salvation of men after their decease, it is to be briefly told. There are many who say that a man is saved by faith, or, in their words, if he only has faith; but for the most part they are those who do not know what faith is. Some think that it is mere thought, some that it is an acknowledgment of something to be believed; some think that it is the whole doctrine of faith, which is to be believed, and others think variously. Thus in the bare conception of what faith is, they wander in error; and so of course, in regard to the means by which a man is saved. But indeed faith is not mere thought, nor is it an acknowledgment of something to be believed, nor a knowledge of all things which belong to the doctrine of faith. By these no one can be saved; for they cannot send a root down deeper than into the thought. Thought saves no one; but it is the life which he procured to himself in the world, by means of the knowledges of faith. This life remains; but all thought which does not comport with his life perishes, even to becoming none at all. Consociations in heaven are according to lives; and by no means according to thoughts which are not of the life. Thoughts which are not of the life are mere pretences, which are altogether rejected." "Every one may know very well that there is never any life without some love, and that there is never any joy but what proceeds from love; and the quality of the life and of the joy is as the quality of the love. If you were to remove the loves, or what is the same, the desires, — for these are of the love — thought would instantly cease and you would be like one dead. This has been shown me to the life. The loves of self and of the world present something like life, and something like joy; but as they are the very opposites of true love — which is to love the Lord above all things, and the neighbor as one's self — it may be evident that they are not loves, but hatreds; for the more any one loves himself and the world, the more he hates the neighbor, and thus the Lord. True love therefore is love to the Lord, and true life is the life of love from Him, and true joy is the joy of that life. There can be but one true love, and therefore but one true life, whence flow true joys and true blessings, such as those of angels in the heavens." (Heavenly Arcana, n. 33)

THE SPIRITUAL MEANING OF AN ECLIPSE

"It is known that man's interior must be purified before the good that he does is good; for the Lord says:—

Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside may be clean also (Matt. xiii. 26).

Man's interior is purified only as he refrains from evils, in accordance with the commandments of the Decalogue. So long as man does not refrain from these evils and does not shun and turn away from them as sins, they constitute his interior, and are like an interposed veil or covering, and in heaven this appears like an eclipse by which the sun is obscured and light is intercepted; also like a fountain of pitch or of black water, from which nothing emanates but what is impure. That which emanates therefrom and that appears before the world as good is not good, because it is defiled by evils from within, for it is Pharisaic and hypocritical good. This good is good from man and is meritorious good. It is otherwise when evils have been removed by a life according to the commandments of the Decalogue." (Apocalypse Explained, n. 939.2)

"Every one may know that thoughts are conveyed and tend according to intentions, or whither a man intends; for the thought is man's inward sight, which is like the outward sight in this, that to whatever point it is bent and intended, thither it turns and there it rests. If therefore the inner sight or thought is turned to the world and rests there, it follows that the thought becomes worldly; if turned to self and self honor, it becomes corporeal. But if it is turned to heaven, it follows that it becomes heavenly and consequently is elevated; if to self, it is drawn down from heaven and immersed in what is corporeal; and if to the world, it is also bent down from heaven, and is diffused upon those objects which are before the eyes. It is man's love which makes his intention, and which determines his internal sight or thought to its objects; thus the love of self to self and its objects, the love of the world to worldly objects, and the love of heaven to heavenly objects. Thus it may be known what is the state of man's interiors, which are of his mind, provided his love be known — namely, that the interiors of him who loves heaven are elevated toward heaven, and are open above; and that the interiors of him who loves the world and of him who loves himself are closed upward, and are open outward."
