We love this quote by sociologist William Cameron who said, 'Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.' It is very insightful and we thought it would make a great topic for discussion today as applied to social media marketing.

All of the various social platforms provide counts of their social signals, such as the plus ones, likes, shares, comments, etc. Obviously, one of the goals of any social media marketer is to get those numbers up.

But, other than satisfying the customer, do these numbers even matter?

We say, yes, they do. Absolutely.

What matters is that these signals are visible to others and they provide a large amount of the social proof that others need in order to feel confident in giving their own endorsement, in the form of a "plus one" or "like" or "share". It takes a brave person to be the first to plus or share a post; however, by the time a post has hundreds of shares, it is pretty "low risk" to share it as you have already seen that others have done so before you.

This is why on our Social Warfare plugin, we offer the ability to hide the numbers until they reach a certain level that you set. This way, people aren't "scared to share" if you don't have a lot of shares; however, once you do have a lot of shares, the social proof will help your posts get shared even more.
