The last spoken words in the Quenta Silmarillion that can be attributed to a certain figure (in this case Maglor) are as follows: "Who can release us?" Oh Maglor, it's not a being. It's death itself. Except you never accept that. You just live on, in endless torment...
Imagine Maglor kneeling in the sand, tears rolling down his cheeks. His knees are bloodied form falling down, his feet torn from walking. From his mouth comes a sad, broken song, punctuated by sobs and screams of rage. The Silmaril is long gone, miles behind him. His sword lies broken on the ground beside him, the rock he used to snap it by his side. Over his back is his harp, one string broken, incapable of music. He wants to die. But he still believe someone will release him. This has to end. He forces himself to stand, each movement drawing agony, his eerie tune carrying across the sea. He stumbles on forever, singing for his dead brothers. The people he killed. The things he saw. Shadows he cannot escape. Delirious and half dead, he will sing forever.
