I often wonder what it's like to have a diploma from the University of Bologna, Italy. Wouldn't that be about the same thing? Best not to take yourself too seriously, either way. The School of Hard Knocks is very expensive, the profs are bad, the classes are really tough. But we all seem to sign up. One of the benefits: you learn it all real good. I graduated with honors.

Social Physics - The New Science of Influence

Why do ideas spread from person to person? How do we marry the worlds of social influence, big data, and behavioural economics?

Enter Social Physics, a concept coined by MIT Professor Alex “Sandy” Pentland.

Director of the Human Dynamics Laboratory, Pentland’s book Social Physics: How Good Ideas Spread – The Lessons from New Science proposes a new theory of human social interaction.

Packaged as a “new science”, Social Physics is defined as a “new way of understanding human behavior based on the analysis of Big Data”.

Grounded in hardcore data-driven research, it distils social, analytical, computational and managerial sciences into a discipline which helps us understand how collective intelligence and social influence works.

bringing a group of young freelance writers to form one business entity was what we though a great way to break the deadlock that young inexperienced writers had but which turned out not to be the case as getting clients or projects was next to impossible. As we resulted to essay competitions to help jumpstart our brand....

Agreed. There are more sides to it. I actually got support when I shared mine with the right people.

Merely pleasing others doesn't win many loyal friends, fans, or customers. #Dedication requires a certain kind of friction that connects with some while leaving others a little roughed up

A small family-owned furniture business achieved revenues and net profitably that they had never experienced in their 98-year history as a company.

Historically the net profit they strived to achieve was 7.0%.  If they had revenues of $10,000 they had a whopping $700 cash to spend on growth, remodeling, or new inventory.  If they had revenues of $100,000 they had $7,000 cash.  More often than not, they did not achieve their goal of 7.0%.  The furniture business; believe it or not, is not historically a high-profit business venture.  (NOTE:  Grocery stores are typically even lower profitability).

This small family-owned business ended up experiencing a record breaking quarter of$500,000 in revenue.  They also achieved their highest net profit EVER in company history, expanding their net profit from the 7.0% goal to an actual realized 15.7%!

What did this cost them to achieve these new revenue and profitability records?

A nice dinner to have the time to sit down and create a growth plan.

The daring to implement and follow through with the growth plan that was created.

Oh, and $21,275...

Wait...  What?  They spent money on a nice dinner AND $21,275?
They had received $78,500 for their efforts!  They were happy to write the check.

Contact SBG immediately to discover how your company can do this as well.  (Dinner not necessary).

I am in the physical security business in Atlanta. I would like to buy another security company that is about the same size.

This is new territory for me. So, what methods or sources have you used to find companies to buy or acquire?

Thanks, Heather.  I'm glad this topic has been beneficial.  I obviously agree that this is the greatest value for retailers but requires a change to their culture.

Great ideas for meeting your online contacts in person

I loved the idea here of creating an event where you invite your 'online friends' in person -- both customers and business friends. That way your relationships with them go beyond just sitting behind a computer screen.

Have you ever done that before?
Do you do a lot of online marketing? Here's how to make make those online leads into real sales.

Would you join a business incubator?
http://bit.ly/1IJhIfH

Business incubator cofounder Joe Maruschak tells us in this Q&A that he thinks incubators are a good idea for very early stage businesses, and that one of the biggest barriers to success in an incubator or an accelerator is arrogance or thinking you know all that you need to know already. He says the biggest benefit is the mentorship and building relationships.

If you were in a business incubator, was that your experience? Would you consider joining an incubator if you haven't before?

Q&A with Business Incubator Co-founder Joe Maruschak http://bit.ly/1IJhIMM

A business in its early stages can often use a leg up, whether it comes in the form of wise words from a mentor or an introduction to a strategic partner.

When you’re first starting out, you may not know who to connect with, or indeed how to do it. That is where incubators come in.
