Storytelling Will Force You To Be A Better Online Marketer.
If you want to be a great online marketer, you may want to start with storytelling.
Why storytelling in the first place? Because everyone loves good stories and crave them every single moment. Let's take James Cameron, the legendary Canadian film maker for example.
When he produced and directed Titanic in 1997, he brought the entire Titanic history into a whole new perspective altogether. Everyone knows about Titanic and how that unsinkable ship sank and dragged along more than 1,500 people down to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean with her. James Cameron didn't showcase about the facts and what has been acknowledged. Instead he brought the audience into Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater's perspective on how the incident happens. James Cameron brought the audience into the world of epic action-packed romance in building up to the sinking incident. It was a great story. Titanic enjoyed a great commercial success by achieving a total worldwide gross of approximately 1.8 billion dollars, a first blockbuster film to ever achieve a billion dollar mark.
I've been following him even before Titanic. Years before that, he created The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Those are among my top 10 favourite movies of all time. Since that, I'm a loyal follower of James and all his movies. To me, he is a great storyteller, a creative one. He is very good in making great unforgettable movies. He doesn't produce movies based on volume but more towards making each and every movie a legend. It took years out of him and his crew to produce a great versatile movie.
Years after that, in December 2009 he introduced us to Avatar.
Avatar is an epic sci-fi movie set in the 22nd century. It is a story about a planet named Pandora that is being ruthlessly colonized by people from Earth. The habitual nature of the planet was so disgracefully torn apart in order to mine some sort of a mineral there. This prompted Pandora's local tribe called Na'vi to take action after they felt threaten by it. I'm sure you've seen the movie, and I'm sure too that you were amazed by the quality of the visual and the story line produced. A great story will always produce a great return of investment. In 2010 which is not even a year after the premier, Avatar broke several box-office records and accumulated a gross revenue of 2 billion dollars at that time. It became a highest grossing movie in Hollywood history, being able to break the 2 billion dollars mark at that time surpassing Titanic.
Now, we're no James Cameron, not movie maker or producer either. But we are good in what we do. For me, I'm very familiar with my own fields which are the social media, content and digital marketing of the world. I'm also very familiar in creating and curating articles about these topics. So what I do is, I am keeping myself busy in producing great, relevant articles related to those, and keep the tone down in a form of storytelling. By keeping it understandable, all my audience are able to relate to those articles and gain some points for them to bring home.
By storytelling too, I'm able to understand my audience better. I'm able to articulate complex experience into something more simpler and meaningful as if I am talking to my friends over coffee. The rhythm and pacing of the story are made simpler to make them able to relate themselves by it. Storyteller doesn't involve much about the technicality of a subject but it is more about connecting to my audience is an emotional manner. People love emotional stuffs that make them think with their heart instead of their brain. These will ensure that my audience love what they read and keep coming back for more.
Audience can relate to your story even though they aren't really from your field of subject matter. Thats how powerful storytelling is. Once your audience can relate to you and your story, they may end up express their interest in what you do. Storytelling doesn't need a lot from us. All it needs is just a skill to have what is in your head into a good understandable writing that people love and can benefit from.
By the way, I heard that Avatar 2 will be released this coming 2017.
