Veil of Darkness

Reading the text of this spell carefully, is there any indication of how long this spell lasts?

In last night's session I made a ruling that it lasts five minutes but the caster must concentrate (spend a major action every round) to maintain it.  The spell can be maintained for longer but at a cost of 1 Magic Power per 5 minutes.  Thoughts?

I think this spell is basically the shadow version of the Water Wall spell. That being the case, just take the duration from that spell:
"The <wall of darkness> lasts until the end of the
encounter, although you can end it earlier as a free action if
you so choose."

+Christoph Daether although I'm understandably biased about said article, it doesn't really deal with monks of the Shaolin variety (with the kung fu and all).

hello, not finding a good specialization for my character I started working on a Polearm master type specialization and was hoping to get some feed back from the community mostly to make sure its not over powered or broken ... thanks

Polearm specialization: Bulwark
Warrior Specialization
Whether it's on the wall or at the gates you make your stand and none shall pass.
With your halberd or other polearm you are the line that should the enemy try to cross they will pay in blood.

Bulwark Talent
class: Warrior
Requirements: Constitution and Dexterity 2 or higher and the talent Pole weapon style (novice).

Novice: make your stand and enter Bulwark mode with an activate action.
The area you can protect is your reach +2 yards
When an enemy is in this zone you gain a +2 to attacks and a -2 to defense.
You can choose to move to change the zone but do so at half speed

Journeyman: while in Bulwark mode you deal a +1D6 extra damage to those in your protected area.

Master: enemies who attempt to move out of or through your protested area, you can
Immediately attack that opponent as a free action (generating stunt points as usual)
You may only do this once per round. After the attack, the normal initiative order resumes. This retaliation does not count as your turn.

you just combined DA bonuses bro, it's completely fine, i've torn the game apart many times now, i can tell it's a completely valid specialization.

Some final testing for the latest release of Digital Character Sheet. A ton of new stuff added and a few quirks ironed out. Here are a few new features:
NEW Additional Info box for each stat.
NEW X/Y option for fields, allowing for Mana, Stamina, anything with a Current/Max style!
NEW 7 total pages are now available in the Spellbook, with each page able to be renamed.

All current user's sheets will load and work and update with no problem!

A bunch of other improvements and bug fixes. Will be going live at https://qualitymix.itch.io/digital-character-sheet soon.

Had a great time with my three intrepid adventurers, virtually no combat was experienced last night due to my players choosing mostly diplomatic routes to the encounters. Jury is still out on how balanced combat is but I'll keep you all posted.

Not sure if possible Bard builds have been discussed before, but I wanted to throw this out as a possible specialization for the Mage class. I wanted something that had the flavor of a musical support mage who helps the party in conflicts both in and outside of combat. Let me know what you think!

Bard
Mages in battle traditionally try to thwart their opponents through amazing displays of elemental fury. But some choose a gentler path, one focused on empowering their allies through song and cheer amidst the chaos of conflict. Bards, known for providing merriment in taverns throughout the world, are also seen on the fields of battle, bolstering their compatriots with songs of inspiration.

Requirements: Music (Novice) and the novice rank in at least one of the following arcana: Fate, Healing, or Heroic.

Novice: Your preferred instrument becomes the form of your arcane device. The musical notes of your instrument carry your arcane powers to your allies, extending the range of spells from the Fate, Healing, and Heroic Arcana by an additional 10 yards. For example, healing touch can be cast on allies up to 10 yards away, and hero’s inspiration can affect targets within 16 yards.

Journeyman: Your music magically charms those who hear you. If you succeed in a TN 12 Communication (Performance) test, all those in earshot are magically swayed by your performance. You have a +2 bonus on any opposed tests against them and you generate an additional 2 SP for Roleplaying Stunts until the time or venue changes.

Master: You are able to string together spells as if they were songs played in sequence. After performing a successful Cast action, you may cast a spell from the Fate, Healing, or Heroic Arcana as a minor action. The spell can not take longer than a major action to cast normally.

Interesting. I never played/read Dragon Age, so I'm not familiar with it. Does the Bard spec in DAGE focus on the charismatic/RP elements of the character type?

Question for all you GMs out there: Would you allow the PC's to exchange weapons with each other while in combat? Earlier, I had one of my rogues ask if he could give his blaster rifle to the other rogue while they were fighting a boss. Have any of you ever encountered a situation like this? How would you handle it?

I agree with everyone else, but would add in a stipulation for magic or "attuned" items. If there's a super powerful magic weapon that gives a bunch of bonuses I wouldn't let the bonuses apply in the thick of things, but they could still use it as a normal or slightly better weapon.

Ok I have of a question....now this same question was asked on the roninarmy forums...
Could someone trade s focus to learn a new weapon group?

I allow a new weapons group in place of a chosen weapon focus. For example if you want your character to have heavy blades but you do not have the wg, then you can instead learn the group so that you do not take any penalties. Since warriors learn new wg all the time, they have to wait. But since the classes are already balanced, doing it this way is a tad op. I only let one player do this once per campaign. Anyone can do it but only the one time to prevent issues.

Version 1.6 just finished uploading. Now you can save custom dice rolls, and access a fully hotkeyed (QWERTY keyboard or keypad ) dice roller, designed to be completely functional using only the keypad or the keyboard. You can use mouse too :)

How many people here use the houserule where Mana points are based in Willpower and not Magic? Do you feel it is/was a necessary change? How strongly would you recommend it as a houserule?

I do. Using Magic for spellpower, effects AND mana makes mages feel like one-trick poneys.

I don't know how often people are in here, but I'm about to start up some Dragon Age and I have a question if it ends up developing into a campaign: I have heard that rogues have trouble keeping up with fighters in combat unless they devote every level up to alternating Dex and Str, does anyone have any experience with this? Potential solutions?

I crunched numbers the other night comparing lvl 5 and 15 warriors and rogues, assuming that they were focusing on STR and DEX respectively with primary level-ups and using secondary level-ups for RP stat gains. I also ran the 15 rogue as if he had focused only on alternating DEX and STR every level. I then listed min and avg damage output using a Longsword for the warrior and a shorts word for the rogue at both lvl 5 and 15 (both versions of the rogue). I tested 3 variants: allowing dex-based melee weapons to add DEX to dmg instead of STR; adding STR + 1/2DEX; and adding 1/2(STR + DEX). Looking at the numbers, IF I changed anything, I would use 1/2(STR + DEX) as it offered a slight increase to a rogue that only focused on DEX vs RAW, didn't OP a rogue who chose to up both STR and DEX unlike the other variants, and still left the warrior feeling like the heavier, reliable DMG dealer. NB: Even in RAW, if the rogue focused on getting backstabs and s/he should be, then focusing only on DEX should work.

*I haven't listed the numbers here because I couldn't figure out how to make a table.

I can even see the three classes: Swindler, Scientist, and Skeptic. Examples could be: Swindler = Venkman, Yates; Scientist = Spengler, Stanz, Holtzmann, Gilbert; Skeptic = Barrett, Zeddimore, Tolan.
