“1940’s Publishing Revolution”
Materials: Photoshopped images (from Internet), India ink & acrylic on paper

This image represents the world of an older man, the passage of time, and the objects that he related to in his youth. I decided to make my collage focus on his youth - specifically representing the 1940’s in Argentina - because it was a very important time in my country’s history. The end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 strongly affected the literary and publishing life in Buenos Aires. Many Spanish immigrants and Argentines started a new period in the country’s history by founding several important publishing companies and changing the way books were written. The different images in this collage each represent this specific period of time. The general feel of the image is of a cosmopolitan man from the city who might have been a part of this publishing boom. The watch, which also appears as a clock, represents the passage from time from the man’s youth, as well numerous newspapers that seem dated. Another symbol of aging is the tree, which has shed its leaves and represents the autumn of ones life. This tree is a natural symbol contrasted with the material goods that are fixed in their vintage status. I chose this specific color palette because I consider these browns, muted blues and reds to be the colors that represent the old man and his world. Brown also represents the earth, and the aging of the natural world, and the Argentine landscape. The images instantly situate us in the world of this old man in his youth.

As our final, Calli and I decided to focus on the perceptions of classes, and the connotations related. For the mash up, we decided to separately search images that fall into a particular social 'category' and the representation that is given. But is also interesting how the results of our searches are effected by our past browser history.

I had to upload my video to Vimeo even though it was edited on youtube, because I was having issues with my youtube account.
I decided to create a Smart Water inspired video, combining images I shot of my friend, with images I found online (both of her and New York City).

Unfortunately all my classmates were already in groups by the time I started working on my final project. So i recruited the help of my friend who was more than happy to not only help me, but also give her insight on the concept I came up with.

Here's my google drive file:

If anyone also wants to check out the video edit I did for this class I'll leave the link here. I had to upload it to Vimeo even though it was edited on youtube, because I was having issues with my youtube account.

Oh this is cool. I love all the places you went. This would be a cool thing to do at the end of every year. What was your favorite place?
Here's my final map attachment as well as my final project analysis, map and playlist. I hope everyone enjoys the mash up!

Final Project

Introduction

Thinking back this past year, I have been constantly traveling throughout the United States for work, school and friends. Being on the road is rather lonely, inevitably working on my own for many the hours in hotels and transport. When I do get a moment to myself, I like to enjoy the scenery as best I can by trying to document the scenery around me or travel off the beaten path for a new location.

Process

Using work, school and family I created my map accordingly. I used icons to describe the activities that I was doing at the location and color-coded locations based off whether they were school related activities (green) leisure, friends and family activities (blue) or work-related activities (red).

I’ve also added a link via Apple Music that has a playlist of music I found appropriate throughout my travels this year. Apple Music streaming service takes music that you like and listen to throughout and updates accordingly based off what you list are your preferences and favorited artists. I like to unwind after weary travels across the country with relaxing music. This mix is my most recently updated mix based off those preferences. I took the songs and uploaded them to my liked videos on my YouTube playlist. Feel free to scan and see if there’s something you like.

Conclusion

I’ve realized that the correlation between East Coast and West Coast on my map mainly has to do with whether I’m traveling for work or pleasure. Although there are a couple exceptions, I’m on the west coast for family activities and the east for school and work. Frequently I tend to try and diversify my travels through work somewhere new but for the most part I’m located throughout Los Angeles and New York City.

It would be interesting to compare a travel map with someone who travels as frequently as I do or perhaps works in the same field of industry as me. I’d like to do a comparison throughout my years to come and see how far I end up traveling throughout the world.

Alike everyone else, I couldn't get the youtube editor to work for me, but I'm very familiar with iMovie and played with that a bit following these guidelines. While working on my final and dealing with pictures that both satirically and literally had commentary on the effect of class' hierarchy, I used mash up techniques that works with the satire as a 'effect' to the video. But it also has a 'mashed up' effect at large, that is intended to disarm the viewer and take them on a journey, rather then a lector.
