"My Religion is The Mountain"

Radiating energy and touching the sky, Cathedral Rock inspires a sense of awe and wonder. Many believe that this rock formation contains a power vortex and magnetic energy that can be both healing and relaxing. I believe we are not separate from our natural world, we are part of it, and this energy exists in us all. It is this connection to the natural world that inspires me. This is where I go to find religion, where I find spiritual peace, and where I am healed.

My religion is in your eyes but my church ain't organized
My faith is in the sweetness that you might realize
But my faith it could be fiction, my faith could not be smart
My religion is the weather, yeah, my church is in your heart

Yin and Yang

Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona can provide some of the most spectacular slot canyon imagery.  Just imagine being the first to stumble across this natural wonder.  What a treasure.  I made this image last year while on quite an adventurous road trip.

F-stop Tilopa BC Bag Review – Plus Medium Slope ICU and Small Pro ICU

I took some time this past weekend to write a review, after 6 months of use, on the Malibu Blue Trilopa BC backpack. Tons of photos. Magazine used for size reference.

Our New Favourite Campsite: Alabama Hills
One of our last stops in last winter’s snowbird season was a place that has been recommended to us by a few fellow RVers: Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California.

Some of the best places we’ve discovered have been from those kinds of recommendations, and this one sure didn’t disappoint. In fact, it’s now our favourite campsite!

We had the most amazing view of any campsite we’ve been to. Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet, was clearly visible from our site (that’s it in the back under the dark cloud).

I made this photo just before sunset one evening as the last of the day’s rays lit up the tops of the peaks. With my Sony NEX6 mirrorless camera firmly attached to my tripod, I used a small aperture to ensure that both the rock in the foreground and the mountains in the background were all sharply in focus.

The best part about this location was that there was no one there but us. Our days usually including a couple of people stopping by for a quick look, but otherwise we had the whole place to ourselves. It’s probably not like that in summertime as it was April when we were there.

It was a bit of a bumpy road getting out there, but not too bad. Nothing broke, so I think it was well worth it!

Arches National Park Sunset 2013

I captured this moment last year on my first day in Moab, UT.  I remember it as if it happened yesterday.  If you're anything like me, the very first thing you want to do is grab a hotel room, offload your junk, and roll into Arches NP for a nice sunset shot.  The park did not disappoint.

This moment in time was created by blending seven different exposures using HDRSoft's merge to 32 bit plugin for Lightroom.  Further contrast adjustments were made in PS.  Though I did bring out foreground shadow and details, I deliberately chose to leave most of the foreground in darkness, as that is what I remember best.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Sedona Slide Fire Photography Exhibition

You might have read about the recent wildfire that burned through parts of the Coconino National Forest in and around Oak Creek Canyon, just outside Sedona Arizona. In its aftermath, the Rotary Clubs of Sedona are sponsoring a juried exhibit of photographs from the area, from before and after the fire.

I am honored that two of my photos, including the one below, were selected to appear in this exhibit!

Entitled, “The Slide Fire Story: A Tribute to Oak Creek Canyon”, 100% of the proceeds from the event will be divided between the Arizona Wildfire and Incident Management Academy and the Slide Fire Disaster Response Fund, which was established and seeded by the Arizona Community Foundation.

There is no admission for the event, but the Rotary Clubs of Sedona suggest a $5 donation to raise funds for these worthy causes.

The event will be open to the public from Saturday, July 12th through Sunday, July 20th at the Sedona Arts Center (15 Art Barn Road in Uptown Sedona).  The doors will be open from 11AM to 6PM daily. Click here for a map to the event:  https://goo.gl/maps/FTAHJ

I plan to attend on Saturday, July 12th, and would love to see you there!

Share and enjoy!

No, I was not abducted by aliens or the NSA.  I have been working feverishly for the past couple of months on special homework for my employer.  While I do get paid for my time, it has effectively killed what time I have for photography.

I need to get out and shoot!  Well, I had a bit of downtime this weekend and decided to peruse my catalog of Antelope Canyon shot just over a year ago.  Here's one that I liked and decided to process.  Hope you like it too.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
