Canyon View - Canyonlands National Park - Utah
Best Viewed Large
Taken from the trip at the beginning of the year. A cold, but luckily windless, morning at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. The morning initially started out pretty hazy, with the canyon filled with clouds. As the fog lifted, it revealed this scene. For those familiar with the area, the rock in the foreground on the left is the beginning of the right side of Mesa Arch.

Photo Notes: Two frames focus stacked in Photoshop. One, one for the distant view the other to bring the detail to the rocks in the foreground.

The Wave, Coyote Buttes, Paria-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Arizona USA

The petrified sand dunes of the Paria Wave are one of the world's great natural wonders. This remote canyon on the border of Utah and Arizona is a visual feast and one of the highlights of the American Southwest. My first visit in the early 90s didn't require a permit, and I had trouble even finding it with the crude GPS of the day!

Over the years the popularity of the Wave has grown exponentially though and in order limit the impact on this delicate area a permit by lottery is now required to visit. Issued by the local BLM office, it provides everything from GPS coordinates to photos along the way (yet people still get lost each year, a reminder that this is wilderness and to come prepared). Once you arrive however, the planning and effort fade away and are quickly replaced with awe as a millenium of light and form spread out beneath your feet.

White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico preserves the largest concentration of pure gypsum sand in the world. The constantly shifting dunes combined with a special quality of light are what make this such a unique photographic destination. Learn more on my blog: http://ow.ly/HXF64

GETTING LOST IN THE LIGHT: Along with a provisioned camera bag, we enter into the wilderness interior carrying the heaviness of our own inner worlds. Some are able to leave a large portion of that weight behind with the slam of a car door, ready to be tested and re-created. Some go back again and again. A few stay. Some leave and never return. Some lose their lives. Read more on my blog:

Anasazi petroglyphs on sandstone, Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada USA

The Ancestral Pueblo Indians known as the Anasazi (or Ancient Ones) thrived in the Four Corners region between 900 and 1200 A.D. before mysteriously disappearing. Their impressive cliff dwellings have stood the test of time in places like Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon, and their rock art is a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of these resourceful people. Read more on my blog: http://ow.ly/JGCjj

It's amazing to think that until the original Navajo Bridge opened in 1929, crossing by boat at Lee's Ferry was the only reliable means across the Colorado River for hundreds of miles through Arizona and Utah.

The cliff dwellings of the American southwest are the most spectacular ruins north of Mexico. The Anasazi Indians (or “ancient ones” as the modern Navajo call them) were the prehistoric pueblo culture that thrived in the Four Corners....

Eerie View - Canyonlands National Park - Utah
Best Viewed Large
Another from the trip earlier this year. A chilly, hazy morning near Mesa Arch. The skies didn't cooperate much in providing a brilliant, glowing sunrise. However, the heavy haze, rising fog, and this bare tree made for a interestingly eerie scene.

Photo Notes: Single frame processed in Lightroom, converted to B&W using Nik Silver Efex.
