Please sign the White House petition for Obama to allocate funds to remove the gang graffiti that has covered Oakland Chinatown businesses for over a year. http://wh.gov/luNUf We have until Sep 9 to get 100,000 signatures.
Hey everyone,

Today, I was running errands in Oakland Chinatown, which is a neighborhood that I often frequented while growing up. I noticed graffiti that has been there for the past year or so, and this type of graffiti is often used by gangs to claim territory. Not only is this dangerous to the residents here, but it just generally drives away business for the restaurant and other owners who work really hard. Oakland Chinatown used to be a fairly safe place for families to gather for dinners and kids to hang out at night in local boba shops and cafes.  All that has changed with the rash of violent crimes on Chinese people here, and little has been done by the local government.  I've done some research in the past year and spoke to different organizations and learned that funds are being spent to protect downtown Oakland but the guards stop at Oakland Chinatown. It pains me to see this community fall into shambles and look like this. The mayor has turned a blind eye.

As some of you may know, Obama set up this program where, if we can obtain 100,000 signatures within 30 days on a petition, the federal government is required to review the matter. All I want is for funds to be allocated to Oakland Chinatown for graffiti removal.  I think this issue has been ongoing for too long, and I'm angry on behalf of the business owners.  The text of the petition reads:

Allocate funds to Oakland Chinatown located in Alameda County, California for the purpose of graffiti removal.  Oakland Chinatown has been forsaken by its mayor and local government. This once-thriving, immigrant-run community has been the target of continuous violent robberies, with armed perpetrators entering restaurants and victimizing restaurant owners and patrons. From 2010 to the present, a rash of brutal homicides and assaults took place in this town, the victims all of Chinese descent. To further exacerbate this situation, taggers spray graffiti all over commercial businesses and signs. Where we often see tagging under freeway overpasses and alleys, the graffiti in Oakland Chinatown is on main streets, directly covering business signs and entrances. The city offers no graffiti abatement program, and the graffiti has not been removed for at least a year. As a result, businesses have shut down.

If you feel strongly enough about this, please sign and share.   http://wh.gov/luNUf  We have one shot -- 100,000 signatures by September 9.
