What is it about human nature that urges us forward? Why do we configure the stars with mathematics; set sail for new horizons; explore the delicate lines of the world in sculpture, words, and images? Why do we improve, advance, construct, deconstruct, cerebrate, and explore? Creation is a natural human inclination which means the world is populated with creators.
This means that every person is an artist in his or her own way which leads me to ask not if a person creates, but how a person creates and why. Art and creation are fluid processes, and no great advancements in art, science, technology, or understanding ever happened by simply repeating the same steps in the same process (well, maybe in scientific experimentation if you want to be incredibly literal about things). All of this leads me to ask: what drives us to create?
I can’t answer this question, so maybe you could help me out by sharing your artwork and telling me what drives you to create. So far I have received and shared artwork of all varieties (written, drawn, sewn, even baked). The answers to what drives each artist to create have varied as well, although there are some common themes. For some it is an escape, others are driven by love, and others are simply driven.
If you find yourself intrigued by these ideas join us in this exploration and burgeoning community. To do so simply send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with “WTOE ARTIST ENTRY” in the subject line. Include your artwork in the body of the email or as an attachment, introduce yourself, and answer this question:
