Open letter to Gautam Gambhir

Dear Gambhir

I am quite aware about the fact that there is no market for such letters in India but I am also sure that decent people still live in this country. I was not surprised to see your confrontational response against the tweet of Shahid Afridi over the recent bloodbath in Kashmir. I do not know either of you at personal level. I believe social networking sites are meant for vigorous debates and discussions but it doesn’t imply that somebody would take the privilege to write anything out of his ignorance and philistinism. Debating Kashmir unrest especially by the people of India is indeed a great gesture. We want as many people as possible to enter into such deliberations. I am still wondering why you turned out to be extremely agitated? Is it because of Afridi or His tweet? Let's discuss it some other day. But all I could understand is that he "condoled" civilian killings and you "justified" them in the same way you justified the shameless work of an army major who tied a Kashmiri to a jeep as a human shield. Hope you have not forgotten that. Let me ask you few questions..

Have you ever been to Kashmir? Do you know what Kashmir issue actually is? Have you ever been exposed to Crackdowns, Frisking, Curfews, Bullets, Pellets, Interrogations and Draconian laws? Have you ever lost a brother/father with bullets, pellets and grenade blasts? Have you ever suffered a humiliation of your sister or mother who were molested in front of your eyes? Have you ever heard about the Kunan Poshpora village where all women irrespective of their age were raped? Have you ever gone through the human rights violation report of Kashmir valley? Have you ever heard about the Gowkadal massacre, the Zakoora and Tengpora massacre, the Bijbehara massacre, the Sopore massacre and so on? Have you ever met the Kashmiri Pandits who never left the Kashmir valley? Have you ever thought as why young children of Kashmir have turned out to be violent to face bullets that kill them? Have you ever introspected as why Burhan Wani declared war against the Indian army just at the age of 15? Imagine if such questions would be asked in an examination, would you be able to answer them? If your conscious says ‘no’ you cannot answer them, then for god’s sake ‘Let you don't ever try to answer them’. Because the more you try to answer them, the more of your ignorance will be exposed.

Let me tell you that your nation has strategically motivated objectives to make disturbed kashmir even more disturbed through all kinds of tactics. The innocent civilians that are getting killed day in and day out are my brothers. Have you seen the terror in their eyes? Have you heard their despairing cries? They have done nothing to deserve this hell on so called paradise on earth. Kashmir remains one of the greatest man-made tragedies of our time. People here have not only suffered a horrible siege for the past six decades but they are now trapped in a daily barrage of brutal attacks. What is a greater terrorism than killing civilians with all sorts of weapons? Is this a war? It’s not a war. It is a cold blooded massacre. Massacre that needs to be condemned by all people irrespective of their race, religion and ethnicity.

The last two years has been like hell for Kashmir by all counts. Hundreds of civilians were gunned down by your army and the massacre continues. The true figures of injured who didn't get noticed are even higher. Today Kashmir, once a thriving landscape, wears the appearance of a ghost valley. Fear, panic, hopelessness and cloud of uncertainty has gripped everybody. The current situation is even more terrifying. We live in constant stress and depression. We live in a bloody war that needs to be stopped contiguously.

Instead of commenting on Kashmir issue, it would have been better if you could use your twitter to save India where rape is seen as easy as buying a chocolate from a shop, where people are forced to say “Bharat Mata Ki…” else they would be declared as anti-nationalists, where Dalit students are beaten to death by their teachers for touching plates, where Muslims are being assassinated for eating beef, where 3000 children die every day of hunger and starvation, where media is more bothered about the fever of Amitabh Bachan and less about the suicide of farmers, where legislative members watch pornography inside assembly houses, where murderer’s rule the country. The list is actually big.

Let me tell you also that Kashmir is a peace loving nation. We also want a life with dignity which disastrously has been denied to us. We do not wish to take stones in our hands. We do not aspire to face with bullets and pellets. Stone pelting is not our hobby. This is the only option to respond to the bullets and pellets thrown at us. We have hundreds of reasons to live but we see ourselves as if we never lived. Did you ever heard any Kashmiri raising slogans on the streets for jobs or roads or development? Our aspirations are entirely political. We want recognition of our own identity. We neither belong to India nor Pakistan nor any other country. You must ask your Parliamentarians as why after six decades, military approach has failed to resolve the Kashmir issue. Attempting to suppress aspirations of millions of people by bullets and pellets is no way to address a political conflict.

Kindly come out from your twitter world to understand the hypocrisy and insincerity of your dissimulating media industry. Kindly stand up against the atrocities of your proud army which are seen as solution rather than problem for us. Also do not try to satisfy yourself that Kashmir is integral part of India. It was a temporary accession with a promised plebiscite as assured by your first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. How India can uphold ‘Kashmir’ as an integral part where it has massacred more than five lac innocent people. Accept that India never had a policy for Kashmir. It never wants to settle the issue. Rather it wants to vanish our history, crush our voice and bury our stories. But remember that stories of dead cannot be buried. Stand up to feel deep shame and discomfort about what has been done to the Kashmiris. I hope you will come forward and play your honest role to end the colonial subjugation of Kashmir. Though humanity is losing its geniuses but still we don’t lose faith in it. That is, hope against hope.
