Faw Final Project Complete

Faw YouTube Project Draft Paper

I am getting close to being done with my YouTube video, it is just taking a good amount of time to complete. Finding the clips I wanted to use from The Walking Dead has been much more complicated than I had originally considered. Also, timing sound events to the sound I want to use has been slightly difficult. Overall, the video still works out well and I think that it will be a decent version of what I had originally planned on producing.

 Faw, How My Idea Changed

My draft is almost a word for word outline of my final paper. I did not change much, however I did decide to add in a few ideas. Instead of sticking only to using religion as an example for false truths, I also added in many more. I used the common belief that Mars is red, coffee is made from beans, and that the Great Wall of China can be seen from outer space. These other examples helped me tie in and relate to the idea of substitute facts from the story Gryphon by Charles Baxter. I think that this change offered quite a lot to my final product and helped everything relate rather well.

Faw Final Paper Draft

Faw Virgin Suicides Movie

The movie more or less sticks exactly to the plot that the book contains, so the movie is definitely pretty faithful to its book counterpart. I say more or less because there are a few minor details that are changed, but the movie sticks to the book's plot rather well and at many times uses dialog directly out of the novel. The movie also uses their soundtrack and camera styles to portray the same distanced eeriness that the book does. The movie does a good job making the viewer feel like they are seeing the story as one of the boys.

The movie does change a few things from the book, but they don't change anything too drastic. They don't really touch on each girl's individual personality like they do in the book, but they do a great job allowing the audience to see the girls as 1 unit much like the neighborhood boys do.  They also change the time in which Mary dies, but it still works well for the story and portrays the same message.  To me, the movie isn't as much a post-modern work about our original as it is just a reenactment of the book. I say this because the plot is almost exactly to the one from the book, they portray the story from the vantage point of the neighborhood boys just like the book, and more or less they make the same points that the book did. I believe that the movie is too similar to the book to consider it as a post-modern version/response to what we already know to be a post-modern novel.

Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
Ok ill go first
My main topic will be over the Cats Cradle and its comparison to a story called Sarah Cole: A type of Love story. My plans are to key in elements of deception in both the stories
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:05 PM
Edson Filipe
yea whats good
Edson • Thu, 11:07 PM
Oh cool, I didn't read that short story, but I like how that idea relates to Cat's Cradle
Thu, 11:07 PM
Hayden Faw
Edson Filipe
i see you guys start already
Edson • Thu, 11:07 PM
Ryan Medellin
we thought you fell asleep haha
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:07 PM

almost bro
Edson • Thu, 11:08 PM
Ryan Medellin
someone else give their main topic
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:08 PM
ok, I can go ahead and give mine
Thu, 11:08 PM
Hayden Faw
Edson Filipe
I am going to write about
the virgin suicide and
Scribner anthology
Girl by Jamaica Kincaid

Scribner anthology
Girl by Jamaica Kincaid is about a mother and daughter although the relationship is not stated. The unnamed mother gives direction to her daughter about how to live as an adult woman, and many of her comments comprise practical advice.
Edson • Thu, 11:10 PM
Ryan Eubank
Ryan I like that you're going to focus on deception. I think that's one of the biggest topics to talk about in cats cradle
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:10 PM
Ryan Medellin
Thanks Ryan yeah i felt like its one of the more important things
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:11 PM
Edson Filipe
I am going to compared and contrast lux with the girl on Scribner anthology
Girl
Edson • Thu, 11:12 PM
Ryan Medellin
both sheltered maybe?
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:12 PM
So, I chose to focus on "False Truths" using both Cat's Cradle and a short story Gryphon, by Charles Baxter. This works out well because in the story Gryphon, a substitute teacher discusses the idea of "substitute facts" to the school children. Which is almost exactly the same thing that Cat's Cradle calls a false truth.
Thu, 11:13 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
hayden that sounds awesome, I think that idea has alot of directions you can take it
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:13 PM
Edson Filipe
sound interesting the true or false thing
Edson • Thu, 11:13 PM
I like your idea too Edson. To me, I think that the parents play the most important role that causes their girl's suicides. I think that will work really well
Thu, 11:14 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
go ahead Ryan give us what ya got
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:14 PM
Edson Filipe
Thanks Hayden
Edson • Thu, 11:15 PM
Ryan Eubank
Yeah I agree hayden I think that's going to workout really well
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:15 PM
Ryan Eubank
For my paper, I'm going to focus on the virgin suicides and the short story "living like weasels." It basically talks about living life to the fullest and I'm going to relate that to the how the girls really never got the opportunity to do that while living such a sheltered life. I'll also probably incorporate how bad family relationships can also play a huge roll on the children's lives too
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:19 PM
Edson Filipe
whats the title of the book on Scribner anthology that you going to use to do last 3 pages
Edson • Thu, 11:21 PM
That sounds like a great idea. I like how the weasel story talks about living life to the fullest, and how Virgin Suicides highlights the more negative side of the same idea. I think that will give a lot of room for both comparison and contrasting ideas
Thu, 11:22 PM
Hayden Faw
Edson Filipe
Ryan Eubank
Edson • Thu, 11:22 PM
Ryan Eubank
Thanks Hayden, yeah I feel like I can go a bunch of different ways with it. Edson, it's called living like weasels. I don't think it's in the book y'all have cause I accidentally got the wrong one
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:24 PM
Alright Ryan, do you want to start the circle over again with your second topic point?
Thu, 11:25 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
Ok great yeah i will
My narrower concept will consist of things not being hat they seem, so i can use examle like with bokonism or the title of the book itself, and the other book the type of love story, also has a title that isnt what it seems as well
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:26 PM
Edson Filipe
wow i like that the way you going to write your paper i guess ill take some of your ideas and put on my paper lol  Ryan Eubank
Edson • Thu, 11:26 PM
Yeah that sounds good Ryan, I think either of those Cat's Cradle ideas are good to use
Thu, 11:28 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
yeah it will just depend on which one i can go deeper with
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:28 PM
I myself plan to focus my narrower topic on Relgion as it pertains to being a possible "False Truth" that people choose to accept. The main point with my paper is that religion cannot be proven with any science or prove-able fact, yet almost everyone chooses to accept it as a Truth.  A truth with the same merit as any truth too; held no lower than the law of gravity.
Thu, 11:29 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
I like the idea of religion that is a huge part of the
cats cradle
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:31 PM
Ryan Eubank
Ouuu that's awesome. I like that idea
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:31 PM
yeah, I think it will be a good topic for me to write about
Thu, 11:32 PM
Hayden Faw
Edson Filipe
yea i like the idea of religion
and the fact that the religion is fake makes it more interesting
Edson • Thu, 11:37 PM
Ryan Medellin
ok edson and ryan go ahead
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:37 PM
Ryan Eubank
I'm not quite sure what I'm going to talk about for my narrower concept but I think I'm going to talk about the innocence of the girls(excluding lux haha) and relate that to dying young and not getting to live a full life and take advantage of the opportunities that life has to offer.
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:37 PM
Ryan Medellin
you cold even include her and talk about the brink of innocence if you wanted too
could*
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:38 PM
Ryan Eubank
Yeah that's true, I'll probably incorporate that some how!
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:39 PM
Yeah, I like that idea. I think that innocence is a big question that the book portrays when it comes to their suicides
Thu, 11:39 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Eubank
gracias, I think so too
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:42 PM
Ryan Medellin
Edson go ahead and then ill address my third topic point.
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:44 PM
Edson Filipe
I am not sure if I should write my paper in three parts (first virgin suicide then Girl and finally the last page do a comparison and contrast between Lux and the girl from the other book) then the last page do the comparison and contrast what you guys think ...The difference between Girl by Jamaica Kincaid and Virgin and Suicide is that all the five girls die. But they have a lot in common for instance the way they are educated to face world and how to behave when they see boys and so on
Edson • Thu, 11:44 PM
Ryan Medellin
I really like how you are tying boys into it, if not the parents i think boys play major rolse in both stories
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:45 PM
Are there 5 girls in the short story too?
Thu, 11:46 PM
Hayden Faw
Edson Filipe
not only one thats why im going to focus on lux
no*
Edson • Thu, 11:47 PM
Ryan Medellin
For my things and characters and events, I am going to address the characters of the main guy in a type of love story and Jonah in cats cradle, thye both are deceived into the situations they are put in and dont benefit from it.
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:47 PM
Wow that sounds like a really cool idea, I always really thought about the religion as a deception, but never really thought about how he might have been brought to it by deception as well
Thu, 11:49 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
thanks bud
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:49 PM
I mainly want to focus on Bokononism and how it portrays itself just as a "general concept" for all religions. I won't focus on characters as much as just the religion itself. I guess I will focus on the substitute from my short story, but more so what she says and her idea than actually focusing on her.
Thu, 11:50 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
the idea of bokonim as a general concept of religion is really strong, you should be able to run with that
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:51 PM
Ryan Eubank
Nice. I'm going to obviously talk about all of the girls and especially the parents role in their lives. Ex- how the mom decided to pull the girls out of school and basically keep them on house arrest.
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:53 PM
Ryan Medellin
yah i would definately focus on parents the most, very important
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:54 PM
Ryan Eubank
yeah that's what i was thinking
Ryan Eubank • Thu, 11:55 PM
yeah, I think that point in the story is a major example of how their parent's did a terrible job
Thu, 11:55 PM
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
ok edson lets hear what you have and then we can all give our final thoughts
Ryan Medellin • Thu, 11:56 PM
Edson Filipe
i want to focus on the parents for instance how they influence the girls and how the catholic religion played a role on the action of the girls
death
Edson • 11 mins
Ryan Medellin
yah if you can relate those to both thatd be really solid.
Ryan Medellin • 11 mins
Edson Filipe
Thanks ryan
Edson • 10 mins
Ryan Medellin
Ok, to finish off lets talk about paper organization, i am going to start off by talking about deception in general and then bring up both at the same time and star comparing and contrasting the way the techniques are used.
Ryan Medellin • 10 mins
That sounds like a solid plan. I think I am going to introduce my idea nd then bring up my stories after as well. I think I may give an overview of each story before bringing up their specific examples, which I will introduce after
8 mins
Hayden Faw
Ryan Eubank
that sounds like a great plan
Ryan Eubank • 7 mins
Ryan Medellin
i can dig it
Ryan Medellin • 5 mins
Ryan Medellin
ok Ryan an Edson go ahead and then lest call it a night
Ryan Medellin • 5 mins
Ryan Eubank
I'll probably start off talking about the parents role's on the daughter's lives. Then, talk about how they could never live a true life. After, compare it to the story about weasels and how they live freely. Then, just talk about the innocence of the girls.
Ryan Eubank • 2 mins
Edson Filipe
On my paper I'll start by introduce both ideas then ill talk about them and then ill do comparison and contrast to finish up ill conclude with my point of view about both families
Edson • 2 mins
Ryan Medellin
I think all of us have really solid and developed ideas
Ryan Medellin • 1 min
Yeah those sound good. I think we are all in a good spot
Now
Hayden Faw
Ryan Medellin
we ready to call it a night? im exhausted haha

Faw Youtube Abstract

My plan is to use scenes out of the movie, as well as scenes from the current television series The Walking Dead.  I will use scenes from the movie to make up a background, or base footage about the Virgin Suicide girls. I then plan to use scenes from The Walking Dead to overlap the main video during key times to allow the viewer to get an active view of how I believe the girls truly felt. It will be a few short clips that will portray a brief overview of what I consider to be a condensed/sped up version of the story at large.

The reason I think that my video will be considered as commentary to the original written work is because I will be taking one of the ideas from the story and bring it forward. By doing so, I will make a short video that will not only portray this major idea from the book in an obvious yet sarcastic manner, but will also allow users to understand the girls in a deeper manner. I may use some voice/sound from the movie, but will also plan on using my own voice-over to create a more summarized/condensed version of the story. Although using clips from the original movie, the plan is to make my video in a manner in which I jump around between times in the plot line, yet allowing the video to flow as if it had it's own script to begin with.

The three stories from the Scribner Anthology collection of stories are as follows: The School by Donald Barthelme, The Management of Grief by Bharati Mukherjee, and Gryphon by Charles Baxter.

The Shoocl, by Donald Barthelme:
I chose this short story because not only does the story relate to The Virgin Suicides by both portraying questions about death. To me, the girls in The Virgin Suicides were never alive. To me, they were dead the whole time because they were denied the right to live by their parents when they decided to shelter their children to the level that they did. In The School, they question that idea that death is quite possibly the most important thing to give meaning to life. This is important to me, because I feel that the girls committed suicide because it was in fact the most lively thing they could do. I also like the idea that the children in this story are possibly "too young" to understand many of this concepts mysteries; much like the girls in the Virgin Suicides.

The Management of Grief by Bharati Mukherjee:
I chose this story because it covers the grieving process of a woman whom lost her husband and two sons. I think that the pain she has to go through can be related to the pain that the girls in The Virgin Suicides had to deal with. In the story she says "I am too old to start over and too young to give up. Like my husband's spirit, I flutter between two worlds." I think this is important because the girls in The Virgin Suicides also lived between worlds, in a state that no one could understand.

Gryphon by Charles Baxter:
I chose this story because of its relevance about false truths. In Cat's Cradle, one of the major ideas was that people have and always will put their belief in false truths; just because they may not be factually correct, doesn't mean that they don't have value. In Gryphon, a substitute teacher plants the idea of "substitute facts" to the children of her class. She tells them this after a student mistakenly multiplies 11 and 6, stating that the answer is 68. The teacher poses the question "Do you think that anyone is going to be hurt by a substitute fact?"  This very closely relates to the idea that in Cat's Cradle, people would rather believe in something that gives them hope/comfort, than worry about the absolutely true actuality of the matter.
