That phrase, “Help Other People At All Times”, is engrained in the heart of every Scout as part of their Scout Oath. Every year around this time, hundreds of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts comb neighborhoods during their annual Scouting for Food drive. This usually requires two weekends to accomplish. The first week, you will see them dropping off bags and flyers, going door to door on foot. The following week you will find these same Scouts retracing their footsteps, retrieving hundreds of bags of non-perishable items ranging from canned goods to toilet paper. Their goal is to fill the food pantries of local Churches so that they, in turn, can help those in need. This year, on March 15th, during one day’s collection, 715 Scouts put in an estimated 3,575 man hours collecting 24,734 total items. This event is repeated by Scouts across the nation every year at this time. There are 31 Cub Scout Packs, 29 Boy Scout Troops and 8 Venture Crews plus one Sea Scout “Ship” and one Varsity Scout Team in Cherokee/Pickens district. Next year, when you see these young men and women handing out collection bags, please help them to help other people.
