+Gary Crabbe thanks!

Yeah, it's summer in February up here. Also, Note the water level lines on the rocks. You can see how low the lake is.

Mined Out -

A worn out building in the ghost town of Rhyolite, NV.  Rhyolite was a boom and bust town from 1904 to 1907.  Discovery of gold influenced investment quickly and Rhyolite quickly became a town of 3000-5000 people and even had electricity, water and rail lines.  It quickly fell after the mine gave out and the financial struggles following the San Francisco 1906 earthquake and the loss of additional investment funds.  Even now in modern times it would seem to be a tough place to live.

I also love that small bit of deep blue sky as an accent to the beauty of this photo!

A slot canyon is a narrow canyon, formed by the wear of water rushing through rock. A slot canyon is significantly deeper than it is wide. Some can measure less than 1 ft across at the top but drop more than 100 ft to the floor of the canyon.

This one, located in Valley Of Fire State Park in Nevada, is an especially narrow slot. It is possible to touch both side through most of it. Although it was beautiful to walk through, I was particularly struck by the amazing colors at the exit. As you can see there was an incredible variety of textures and colors - orange, red, purple, white, yellow, and even blue.

I have a new passion for slot canyons. And lucky for me, I live only a few hours from southern Utah. The U.S. state of Utah has the largest concentration of slot canyons in the world. Utah slot canyons are found places such as Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which are all within a few hours drive from me. Slot canyons of Utah include Buckskin Gulch, the longest slot canyon in the world at over 13 miles long!

The Flow -

The Valley of Fire about 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas is famous for it's red rocks and especially the rock formation called The Wave.   This shot is near The Wave but looks more like a rock flow to me.  Equally impressive in my view.

It doesn't look like it could be natural in origin, but Mother Nature doesn't know any better.

Sunfire -

If you get tired or bored in Las Vegas, the Valley of Fire is about 40 miles north of the strip. Spectacular rock coloring and formations. Further up from this location in the Valley of Fire is a famous rock formation called "The Wave".
