#HMI research regarding #autonomous vehicles is a very important line of investigation. Many #humanfactors researchers are currently conducting research to determine driver behavior under conditions in which the #selfdrivingcar fails.
Even though this is important to know, equally as important is investigating driving behavior when the driver has to take over under NORMAL conditions. Not a failure situation. For example, an autonomous system designed for the highway will require the driver to take over on surface streets. If so, how might driver disengagement when on a highway, influence driving after taking over on surface streets? There has been no failure but the driver is being tasked with paying attention to the driving task, after being I a sustained level of complete disengagement.

We as researchers need to focus on this as this situation is going to be incredibly common. Much more common than a failure.
