Rama Yantra, Jantar Mantar, Delhi, India:
Jantar Mantar is an architectural astronomical observatory. The construction of its 13 structures was completed in 1724 CE. Over the next decade, Maharaja Jai Singh II built 4 more Jantar Mantars in Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi.

The image is of the interior of Rama Yantra. The Rama Yantra consists of a pair of cylindrical structures, open to the sky, each with a pillar or pole at the centre. The height of the pillar and walls is equal to the radius of the structure. The scales indicating angles of altitude and azimuth are inscribed on the floor and interior surface of walls.

The Rama Yantra is used to observe the position of any celestial object. To do that, the simple principle of aligning it with the top of the pillar and a calibrated point on the floor or the wall was used.
