"The last thing an engineer wants to hear is ... Invent this thing for me and you have unlimited money and unlimited constraints.  No.  This is not where you extract the creativity of the engineer.  You get the creativity of an engineer when you say the parameters are ... it's gotta do this under these conditions, under this temperature, and it's gotta fit into this box, and run on this much power." ~ Neil deGrasse Tyson

Applying these restraints to the world of engineering is applicable to the world of art, as David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson discuss on the latest Star Talk Podcast.

For the independent filmmaker, embracing and welcoming the "restraints" is where we will flourish.  So, embrace the no-budget challenge.

What are your thoughts?

Neil Tyson explores art, science and creativity with musician David Byrne, Dr. Mónica López-González, Prof. David Cope, co-host Maeve Higgins and Bill Nye.

One of the best podcast interviews I've listen to about the art of networking and being prepared to deliver when your opportunity arises.  If you want to be a screenwriter, then Carlito Rodriguez's story will inspire you.

Netflix's business is subscribers. Nearly 75 million subscribers spending almost $10/month. $750 million/month. They take the data from their subscribers and either license or make original content that matches the desires of their customers.

The über independent can build a super small subscriber base of say, a few hundred subscribers. What additional value can you as a filmmaker offer your small subscriber base that is worth $10/month? With a 500 subscribers at $10/month, you can earn $5,000/month; $60,000/year. Should be enough to fund a micro-budget film on a continuous basis.

Netflix Inc's (NFLX.O) aggressive push into international markets won more customers than the video streaming service and its investors expected last quarter, sending its shares surging 7 percent.

"If a constant state of oversupply isn’t sustainable in any other industry, how is it somehow sustainable in film?"

This is an older article, the author seems to get hammered in the comment section about proclaiming that the indie film industry needs to produce less supply.  There are other interesting tidbits that I think get lost.

What are your thoughts?

http://www.salon.com/2014/02/22/americas_next_wal_mart_the_indie_film_industry/
Cheap labor and subsidies have created an unsustainable bubble. We need fewer indie films, not more
