Breaking free of your comfort zone

Some good pointers in this piece. Talk to new people. Seek new perspectives. Be open to discovery!

I like this excerpt:
Habitual thinking is the brain's way to be efficient, but it also tends to keep you in your comfort zone. If you know what works one time, your brain starts to recognize this and create more defined neural pathways that allow you to almost unconsciously create an efficient action.

Can Big Data Improve Medical Diagnoses?

Cool. Machines may recognize cancers before we do.

Citation: What if software akin to the program that recognizes faces in Facebook photos could detect cancer in an x-ray?

That’s the idea behind Enlitic, a new startup founded by Jeremy Howard. Howard is a heavy hitter in big data: He’s data strategist for Silicon Valley venture capital powerhouse Khosla Ventures and former president and chief scientist of Kaggle, which hosts big-brain predictive modeling competitions.

Enlitic aims to use advances in machine learning to make medical diagnoses. The company says it has partnered with hospitals and medical imaging companies – Howard won’t say which ones – to mine a host of data sources, including x-rays, lab results, handwritten doctors notes, and claims records. The company is building software algorithms that identify otherwise invisible patterns in these data sources, making for sharper diagnoses.

London calling: U.K. pulls in record investments — led by U.S. investors

Citation:
Research by UK Trade & Investment has revealed that 1,773 projects were established using ‘inward investment’ in 2013/14 – a rise of 14% on the previous year.

The investment created over 65,000 jobs, which is the highest total since 2001.
. . .
The U.K. was the largest recipient of investment in Europe. Almost 20 percent of all capital investments destined for Europe was U.K. bound.
. . .
While London has been the main benefactor of foreign investment, the UKTI report shows that the benefits are spread throughout the U.K.

England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all recorded increases in the number of investment projects landing and new jobs created.

Crafting a compelling Business Model Narrative

Citation:
This narrative needs to be a really compact synopsis, the real kernel of your business model, it forms the basis for the narrative and why your story is valuable to the one listening.
. . .
It is the story that makes the sense of your business model. It conveys its value, its sense of mission, your personal visions, it offers the place where you communicate and connect the business model with the listener.
. . .
1) Describe what your business model will do.
2) What makes this business model special?
3) Who is it for?
4) What does your business model resolve?
5) Why you are thinking beyond the immediate?
6) What do you envisage are the resources and actions needed?
7) summarize why you will succeed

Free Companies House data to boost UK economy

Citation:
Companies House is to make all of its digital data available free of charge. This will make the UK the first country to establish a truly open register of business information.

As a result, it will be easier for businesses and members of the public to research and scrutinise the activities and ownership of companies and connected individuals. Last year (2013/14), customers searching the Companies House website spent £8.7 million accessing company information on the register.

This is a considerable step forward in improving corporate transparency; a key strand of the G8 declaration at the Lough Erne summit in 2013.

It will also open up opportunities for entrepreneurs to come up with innovative ways of using the information.

This change will come into effect from the second quarter of 2015 (April – June).

Open data: Unlocking innovation and performance with liquid information

Citation:
[McKinsey] research suggests that seven sectors alone could generate more than $3 trillion a year in additional value as a result of open data, which is already giving rise to hundreds of entrepreneurial businesses and helping established companies to segment markets, define new products and services, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Although the open-data phenomenon is in its early days, we see a clear potential to unlock significant economic value by applying advanced analytics to both open and proprietary knowledge. Open data can become an instrument for breaking down information gaps across industries, allowing companies to share benchmarks and spread best practices that raise productivity. Blended with proprietary data sets, it can propel innovation and help organizations replace traditional and intuitive decision-making approaches with data-driven ones. Open-data analytics can also help uncover consumer preferences, allowing companies to improve new products and to uncover anomalies and needless variations. That can lead to leaner, more reliable processes.

How does Education produce entrepreneurs?

Insights:

"What is needed is a system that takes seriously the most vital life skill that students in the UK could acquire: the ability to think and act entrepreneurially. Only by learning that critical set of skills will this generation be able to adapt to the volatile and uncertain economic future it faces."

"Embracing entrepreneurship in the heart of its education system from beginning to end is quite likely the most important step the UK can take to help reverse the trends of rising youth unemployment and social dislocation."

"At its core, thinking and acting entrepreneurially is about a cycle of act-learn-build. You take a step, learn from that – whether it’s good news or bad – and build on that learning to take the next step. Now it is time for UK educators to take that first step, and embrace entrepreneurial principles on a systemic basis, so they can practise what they preach."

Entrepreneurs: Beware of Vanity Metrics

An excellent article by Eric Ries, the entrepreneur and author who pioneered the lean startup movement.

Citation:
he idea is simple. Establish baseline metrics by building the minimum viable product — the minimum required to measure the response of early adopters. Then, in each development cycle, use the insights gained by studying customers to make improvements. This is the source of validated learning — proof that the customer insights translate into tangible metrics improvements. / #Entrepreneurs    #GrowIncome   #DriveInnovation
. . .
This is the curse of vanity metrics, numbers which look good on paper but aren’t action oriented: website hits, message volume, or “billions and billions served.” They look great in a press release, but what do they accomplish?
. . .
... different parts of the team are constantly “learning” in their own private reality. When those teams face difficult choices, it’s incredibly hard for them to come together and make an informed, fact-based decision. / #Collaboration   #DecisionMaking

To avoid falling into this trap, I recommend you follow the three A’s of metrics. All metrics should be actionable, accessible, and auditable.
. . .
I have found that most entrepreneurs — in any sized company — will readily agree that better analytics leads to better results. But how do they know when it makes sense to make infrastructure investments? / #Analytics

#OpenData a Boon for Entrepreneurs

Citation: Government Data Creating Business Opportunities for Tech-Savvy Entrepreneurs

More cities are putting information on everything from street-cleaning schedules to police-response times and restaurant inspection reports in the public domain, in the hope that people will find a way to make money off the data. / #GrowIncome #Entrepreneurs

Supporters of such programs often see them as a local economic stimulus plan, allowing software developers and entrepreneurs in cities ranging from San Francisco to South Bend, Ind., to New York, to build new businesses based on the information they get from government websites. / #USA #LocalGovernment #Urbanisation
