The Vaccines “Handsome” (Jan’15) isn’t just an English version of a Ramones song but its cunt hair close. Two minutes and thank you ma’am? Check. The singer’s phrasing and r-r-r repetition? Check. Recycled 50’s pop melodies. Check. Instrumentation? Well I don’t remember the Ramones for keyboards but fuck knows. Three chords? Actually four you tired old clichéd hack. Tongue planted so firmly in cheek a change of wind would leave ‘em with a cock sucking face. Check. A tune as sticky as a rapist in church… fuck this, my job is done here.

More bop than blitzkrieg The Vaccines have created a blast of deceptively fun pop with copious handclaps that just won’t quit. The tune is about pricks they have met who have celebrity thanks to not hitting all the branches on the ugly tree when they fell down and yet wanna whinge about it. “Handsome” is a blow job on a Saturday night driving through big city streets, exhilarating, and even if you have a speech impediment still a dead cert one of the best indie songs of 2015.

“…my body is a temple you can worship at my feet
But I might kick you in the teeth…”

The Best Indie Songs of 2015 - The Mowgli's

The Mowgli’s “I’m Good” (Jan’15) starts off with a ska rag, big drum and some laid back lead straight out of the bag and heads are nodding and arses wobbling. Then it’s how’s your father and into a big as Melissa McCarthy’s mommas ass singalong chorus with everyone in bar the kitchen sink and color by numbers lyrics. But that’s a good thing. This song will have you smiling like a retard masturbating.

A song about being comfortable living in your own skin regardless of societal expectations and the power of solidarity, it’s a take home message in an indie pop tune so sweet pharmaceutical companies are laughing evilly in their sleep. But if you don’t like this song, call the doctor, you really are broken inside. This tune is Indie with a capital “I”, a hurricane of happy and would make a death row inmate on his last meal hopeful. I’m not fucking with you when I goddamn testify it's one of the best indie songs of 2015.

“It’s been a long time living this way
Worrying what people say
Feeling like I won’t fit in
But I won’t give up, no I won’t give in”

Mini Mansions “Freakout!” (Feb’15) has a rock dance vibe. Yeah in that order. If you don’t like Mini Mansions let me assure you there’s a damn sight more crackle and pop in this track than their usual limp wristed wank. A bit like “Death Is A Girl” and a bit David Bowie-ish in parts. Ziggy Stardust to be precise.

There’s a bass and drum stomp that marches the song jauntily forward, in juxtaposition to some maudlin lyrics, toward a crescendo of a chorus. A track about social unease it’s got a strong dose of something outside the box and is, fuckin easily, one of the best indie songs of 2015.

“… Face in the crowd
You're laughing too loud…”
