Question--In Ubuntu-MATE 16.10 there is a set start home-page within Firefox set by the config file and it cannot be easily changed in Firefox preferences as it used to be. I was able to change it since I want my home-page to just go to the Google search page. Hoping that this gets fixed by the next updates for 17.04.

Here is how I did it:
In Terminal type sudo nano /usr/lib/firefox/ubuntumate.cfg then enter
Then change the default start location to www.XXXXXXX.com (X's are where you want to make your home page_ Then be sure to save and exit and your system should work. I found I had to get rid of the "start" portion of the command and just type in the web address "www.google.com" and be sure to leave the ending portion of the command as is. Hope this helps.

It's stupid obvious, but commonly overlooked. #Linux
So on occasion, I rely on my wife’s Macbook Pro as I lack a laptop. Before you judge, understand that it’s dual-booting OS X and Ubuntu MATE 16.04. For obvious reasons, I use the latter. At home, I’m able to connect to my home wifi network without any issues at all. Pure 802.11n goodness, zero+ Read More

Today’s quick tip should help you to deal with a common NVIDIA video issue that plagues many of us. Somethings to consider before going forward include: 1) You’re using X11 and NOT Wayland. 2) This addresses horizontal video game tearing that affects many Linux gamers using NVIDIA cards with the current proprietary video drivers. 3)+ Read More

Ambiant-MATE icons for battery

I made few modifications to the battery icons. In fact, I use a panel of 32 pixels. So, the battery icons don't look well (not center). The icons size isn't good : 32x24 instead of 24x24.

I modified a little the icons to make a 24x24 icons.
I delete few redundant icons and make simlinks.
I modified the battery_plugged icon to looks like the others (smaller and rotate).

If you wan't try :
- Download the file in http://dl.free.fr/bo2eyGS6o
- Extract the icons
- Copy the icons in the correct directory (sudo cp battery*.svg /usr/share/icons/Ambiant-MATE/status/24/)

While none of this affects me using 16.04, I've had others say there is still a NM bug. The second half of this article should provide some relief.
I’ll admit it. My ancient netbook and my wife’s 2010-era Macbook Pro don’t have any problem reconnecting to wifi after resuming from suspend on Ubuntu MATE 16.04. Sadly, however, I keep hearing of other people who, despite various updates, seem to still be struggling with it. Therefore, I’m going to offer two potential solutions that+ Read More

Is there a way to increase the font size in apps? I've tried everything I could but some are just so small that they're almost unusable. The screenshot example is from Brackets, which is what I'd need for coding websites!

This is on an Entroware Athena!

Hi Mate developers and enthusiasts, I have a Panel question for 16.04 - when I am using the Mate TWEAK "Redmond" interface and I add a new launcher to the immediate right of Thunderbird, the task bar disappears off screen. I can't see any way to resize the task bar so that it stays on screen with the new launcher to the left.

Any ideas? Other than this hiccup, I'm a very pleased Ubuntu MATE user. So thank you!

I couldn't get the Windows 10 Transformation Pack to work. The only problem I noticed in the install was mateconftool-2 was missing. I did some research, and as far as I can tell that's been deprecated. On making my own panel, I still had a problem arranging everything to my liking. Thank you for your help anyway - I'll just push the kids to use the other layouts. I think the Cupertino and Mutiny themes are very pretty.

Dear Ubuntus,
I am very new to Linux and Ubuntu, and I might start to like it... if I only could get it to work properly.

I need to install a GUI on my RasPi so that Wine can be installed, after wihch I can hopefully run MetaTrader4. Hope to earn a lot of money 24/7 ;) I chose MATE.

However, I get stuck on launching MATE. My username is default ubuntu, and when I manually command startx it returns a message: 'bad display name "ubuntu:1" in "remove" command .

Googling this resulted in suggestions of adding a line in some file. This is where I get lost. No clue what file to edit, nor how to do so.

Any help would be highly appreciated, thnx in advantage!

Power Indicator !

Just a little "trick" to use the power indicator with MATE.
* Install the packages : sudo apt-get install indicator-power gnome-power-manager

(indicator-power for the power indicator in the systray ;
gnome-power-manager to show the battery stats when you click on an item)

* Enable upower (it doesn't start automatically with power indicator) : sudo systemctl enable upower.service

* Disable the autostart of MATE power manager in the Startup Applications Preferences

* Modify the indicator-power.desktop : sudo pluma /etc/xdg/autostart/indicator-power.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Indicator Power
Exec=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/indicator-power/indicator-power-service
OnlyShowIn=Unity;GNOME;MATE;
NoDisplay=true
StartupNotify=false
Terminal=false
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=indicator-power

(I removed the AutostartCondition line and add MATE in the OnlyShowIn !)

Voila !
