It’s GTK3+ baby, all of it!

See the release note below for more information and downloads.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 is, more or less, a re-working of Ubuntu MATE from scratch, not just to accommodate GTK3+ but to also make most of the packages shipped by default with Ubuntu MATE “Recommended”. This means most default applications can now be uninstalled without issue.

The work to port MATE Desktop to GTK3+ has been ongoing for a couple of years and Ubuntu MATE is the first major distribution to ship a full GTK3+ implementation of the MATE Desktop. And the absolute latest release too, MATE Desktop 1.16! Firefox and LibreOffice are also GTK3+ only in Yakkety.

This has been no small undertaking, we’ve changed toolkits twice this cycle. First from GTK 2.24.x to GTK 3.18, and then again to GTK 3.20. The themes required two significant upgrades during this process. We’ve also upgraded through three MATE Desktop versions this cycle, starting from 1.12 to 1.14, to 1.15 and finally to 1.16.

We originally planned to complete the migration to GTK3+ for the Ubuntu MATE 17.04 release, but thanks to those of you who have generously supported the Ubuntu MATE crowd-funding we’ve achieved that objective well ahead of schedule!

Ubuntu MATE have paid €5653 to Open Source developers working on MATE Desktop and Ubuntu MATE projects during the six months of the Ubuntu MATE 16.10 development cycle. You, the Ubuntu MATE community, have made it possible to complete the migration to GTK3+ half a year early!

Thank you all for your continued support!

(noting my comments about dev-wise, above) I thought that 1.16 on any version would be gtk3, but that answers clears that up for me.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Beta 1 is out and it's perfectly boring!

This beta release is all about the plumbing that transitions Ubuntu MATE to GTK 3.20. It really isn’t very interesting from an end-users perspective.

From this point forward we’ll be focusing on fixing as many issues as we can on the lead up to Beta 2 and the final release of Ubuntu MATE 16.10. The 16.10 development cycle was all about the migration to GTK3+ and creating the new foundations upon which to build our “retrospective future”.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 2 is out!

Added MATE Heads-Up Display (HUD), runs menubar commands, much like the Unity 7 HUD. Disabled by default, but can be enabled via MATE Tweak. Once activated the HUD can be invoked via CTRL + ALT + Space.

Upgraded to MATE Tweak 16.10.4. Improved Indicator support with the introduction of the Message Menu.

Upgraded to MATE Dock Applet 0.73. Drag and drop rearranging of dock icons. Redesigned the window list which appears when the mouse is hovered over a dock icon. Window titles are ellipsized if they are too long. Additional actions that the application supports are now shown at the top of the window list. Pinning and Unpinning is now always shown at the bottom of the window list.

Upgraded to Ubuntu MATE Welcome 16.10.7. Auto focus the search text entry. Updated translations.

Firefox now has a customised Ubuntu MATE Start Page. Cheese has been re-instated as a default application. Indicator Session has been re-instated in Ubiquity while installing Ubuntu MATE. The .iso image is approximately 150MB smaller.

Thanks for the info.  I have not been back to windows since so far but I am getting desperate about not being able to play my one and only game on Facebook (which I usually use a mini-client for in Windows) but Facebook would do here in Mate if I could get the flash on this OS to work with it.  The game is asking for a later version.  But I got one of the popcorn times working so I am happy about that and all the things I can do on here are just...easier but I do have some familiarity with ubuntu over the years, just never stuck with it.  I am old and my brain is slow due to illness and I just move forward a bit at a time, whatever I am doing so I don't think I will be on here a great deal.  I will ask for advice about making Wartune work maybe, but right now I just want to poke around.  Thanks all.

Beaut, beauty! We’re stoked to announce Ubuntu MATE 16.10 Alpha 1, the first distro to ship a fair dinkum MATE Desktop implementation built entirely against GTK3+. Some thought we’d let the kangaroos loose in the top paddock by being the first distro to switch to GTK3+ and it would all come a gutser. But we put in big mobs of effort to ensure it’s not complete ball dust. Give it a burl!

Hat tip to +SystemAU Podcast.

Yesterday the +MATE Desktop team released a complete suite of MATE Desktop 1.15 development packages.

These are what, after testing and refinement, will become MATE Desktop 1.16. Small team, rapid development. Love it! 😎

Here is a PPA for Brisk Menu. This PPA is compatible with Ubuntu MATE 16.10 and Ubuntu MATE 17.04 daily images.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:flexiondotorg/brisk-menu
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mate-applet-brisk-menu

Once installed add to any panel in the usual way.

Many thanks to +Ikey Doherty from +Solus for working on Brisk Menu 😃

No, GTK 3.20 is in the Ubuntu 16.10 archive. So Ubuntu MATE 16.10 will be MATE 1.16 based on GTK 3.20.

I think our friends at +Fedora Project will be the first to release MATE 1.16 on GTK 3.22 with Fedora 25, due for release in November.

As usual the Ubuntu MATE community has been very generous in their funding of the project! In June we've been able to pay €781 to 5 Open Source developers working on Ubuntu MATE and MATE Desktop projects, bringing our running total to ~$8158.09.

It is through the Ubuntu MATE crowd funding we've been able to accelerate the development of Ubuntu MATE 16.10 and complete nearly all of the GTK3+ transition for the first alpha. It really makes a huge difference to the project momentum. Thank you!
