It is very pleasing to see that Trisquel is now based on Ubuntu 16.04 and the MATE Desktop 😀
Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 alpha is now available for download and testing. Based on Ubuntu 16.04, Trisquel 8.0 also ships with the MATE 1.12 desktop.

I've stated for years how much I dislike Ubuntu's Unity interface. Yes, it's become more polished through the years, but it's just not an interface that thinks the same way I do. That's likely because I'm old and inflexible, but nevertheless, I've done everything I could to avoid using Unity, which usually means switching to Xubuntu.

I did a clean install yesterday. All is working fantastically. Much better that when I tried the first beta. Only bug I've found so far so far is the nvidia applet is not working in the panel, but it wasn't in 16.04.1 either. Just told it to report it and ignore. The proprietary driver is working fine. I can see where 16.10 is a little more new user friendly than 16.04 was. Good job to the Dev team. Looks like another winner to your credit.

Wish there was a time stamp for the section, if I have to listen to these opinionated bumbleheads do another sponsor spot I think I'm going to cry. I'm with Lunduke on this one, just about the only person worth listening to on Jupiter is Allan Jude & Kris Moore and I don't even run BSD.

Yep, sad news indeed about MATE Heads-up Display.

Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Beta now available for download, but you should not expect any major features. Actually, the MATE Heads-Up Display (HUD) got removed :(

+Polihron Alexandru My wife uses here laptop to do our finances and deal with her photos and such. When we met she the computer she had didn't work. I bought her a laptop set it up with Linux. I believe at the time it was probably Mint running XFCE. I put kmymoney on it, pysolfc for her to play solitaire with, and vlc for her to watch the videos she took with her camera. If we go shopping for printers and such she even knows to look under system requirements on the packaging to see if it is Linux compatible. If Linux isn't mentioned she looks to see if it is Mac compatible because she knows Mac is Unix based and there is a good chance that means it will work with Linux as well.

Mathew is like a lot of people you see trolling forums. He is on the Linux bandwagon as long as everything is going without issue. When there is a problem he wants someone else to give him the easy answer so he won't have to actually work through the problem himself.

My only issue right now with Ubuntu Mate is that the webcam on my laptop is showing my image flipped. I don't want any help fixing it first off because it is only a minor issue and If need be I have a GoPro I can hook up and use. Secondly if I rely on someone else to give me the easy answer then chances are the knowledge I glean from working through the issue will not stick with me for future reference when needed.

"Of the three Ubuntu flavors taking part only Ubuntu MATE has a changelog worth a mention."
The second alpha release of the Ubuntu 16.10 development cycle is now available for download, with Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin and Ubuntu MATE taking part.

Similar journey here, except that XFCE was never much good to me: no flexible desktop icon placement, and no good world clock.

That didn't go so well. Nvidia Optimus applet not working. Several links in Software Boutique aren't working. Only other software sources in the Boutique are Gnome Software and Synaptic. I installed Synaptic from cli. Gnome Software not working. Graphics were jittery under Marco software rendering. Better under Marco GPU Rendering.

Ran
sudo apt upgrade

There were already around 300mb upgrades. None took care of the issues. I needed my daily driver back for to occupy dead time at work tonight. Reinstalled 16.04. Will let beta 1 rest for a week or so and maybe install it on my desktop after a few more bugs are worked out.
