2015 Perseid Meteor Shower

This is a stack of Perseid meteors from a timelapse I shot on August 13, 2015 from my back yard in Lee, Maine, USA. I chose my 50 favorite meteors from 12:52 AM to 04:08 AM, rotated and aligned the frames so the stars are all in a fixed position, and masked in the meteors so you could see them radiating from Perseus. I added constellation lines for Cassiopeia and Perseus to one of the photos. The star trails photo was stacked from 364 images with Advanced Stacker Plus in Photoshop. It took a few days to manually remove every satellite, airplane, and meteor from the photos before stacking.

The green color in the sky is caused by air glow. The Andromeda galaxy can be seen to the right of our Milky Way as Pleiades and Capella rise from the tree tops, facing roughly 58° north east on the compass dial. The Double Cluster is just to the left of a bright meteor near the middle of the photo. Polaris or the North Star is opposite Andromeda on the other side of our Milky Way.

Taken with a +Nikon USA D810, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, DewNot heat strip, DewBuster Controller, +Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod & BH-55 ballhead, and qDslrDashboard running on a Nexus 7 (2013 model) for shutter, ISO, and aperture ramping. These shots were taken at 14mm, f/2.8, 20 seconds, 3550°K, and ISO 5000 to ISO 800 during astronomic dawn. Edited with Lightroom / LRTimelapse, aligned with RegiStar, and stacked with Photoshop as 16-bit TIFFs.

Time Warp on Cadillac Mountain

Everyone has been making these beautiful “twirl” photos in Photoshop lately, and it got me thinking that it might look really interesting in a spherical panorama of the Milky Way—half like a galaxy and half like a crazy time warp! So here’s my take on the abstract twirl…

The full sphere can be explored on RoundMe: https://round.me/tour/4844/view/27579/

The Milky Way and green air glow that is behind the twirl were taken by +Matt Pollock and I from Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, Maine on July 26, 2014. This is a crop of a spherical panorama, looking straight up like a fisheye lens. The full sphere consists of 5 photos of the sky blended with 4 photos of the ground. It took about 22 minutes to shoot from 11:30 – 11:52 PM. We spent the rest of the night shooting a timelapse for star trails.

Camera settings: ISO 6400, f/2.8, 40 seconds, & 3550°K white balance for the sky blended with ISO 6400, f/2.8, 160 seconds, & 3786°K white balance for the ground.

Hardware used: Nikon D810, Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 (lens hood shaved off for full frame use), +Promote Control, and +Really Right Stuff TVC-34L tripod with leveling base & multi-row pano package.

Software used: Edited with Lightroom, stitched with PTGui Pro, and blended with Photoshop. Pixel Fixer was used with a dark frame to remove hot pixels from long exposures at high ISO.

I'm excited and working on this week's workshop at Parkwood Studios. Gathering balloons, food coloring, light bulbs, wine glasses and a BB Gun.
Image below was shot at 10,488/sec T1 light speed.
Still some seats open for this fun (and messy) workshop.

We use light to freeze motion from the studio strobes or a speed light. Shutter is only 160 sec but the speed of the light flash (all the camera sees) is about 8000sec

About this community

PAC is all about Photography, friends, & fun. Our goal is to enjoy ourselves while promoting the art of Photography & Photoshop, and to give members the opportunity to meet other members with similar interests. As such, we try to schedule both Free Photo shoots & Social Events (movies, rafting, dinners, happy hours, museum visits, etc.) At our Shoots It's all about serious photography. While most of the destinations are landscapes, we will also focus on resident wildlife found on location. Serious pre-planning and thought is put into selecting prime photography destinations. It is recommended that those who want to participate have an Digital SLR, but it is not a requirement.
