Maria Sharapova is surprised to have dodged arch-nemesis Serena Williams at the Brisbane International but isn't complaining.

Despite Williams struggling to keep her lofty standards early in 2014 as she failed in the opening three grand slams, Sharapova believes the peerless American remains as tough as ever.

Some may think Williams is becoming vulnerable at age 33 but all the world No.2 could think of was her rival's 22-2 match record since Wimbledon.

Included in that run was an 18th grand slam title at the US Open and victory at the tour-ending championship.
