This week we found out that Alexa can order a pizza and now works with Spotify. Today Alexa can order you an Uber. Not exactly sure why you would want to do this, when you can use your phone, but it's still kind of cool.
You can use Amazon's Echo device to order a pizza or stream music on Spotify, so shouldn't you be able to ask the digital assistant "Alexa" to call you a car from Uber? Well, starting today, you can.

With Math I Can

I'm not too sure what this has to do with Amazon.

If Amazon bought Etsy it would be like Michael Bloomberg signing on as Bernie Sanders' campaign manager. I have great admiration for both of these men in different ways, but it's a complete cultural disconnect that wouldn't serve either of them well. This is not to say that Amazon shouldn't do their artisanal marketplace Handmade, because it's good for people to have the opportunity to sell in both shops if they want to.

If Amazon buys Etsy with an eye to merge it into Handmade I fear they will discover that Etsy's buyers and sellers will flee to the many niche artisinal online marketplaces. A lose-lose-lose-lose. A lose for Amazon, a lose for Etsy, a lose for the sellers, and a lose for the buyers. It will just be one of those things in life--something that was wonderful that is no longer with us.

As a lover of Amazon, I hope they don't waste their money on this. There are an infinite number of marketplaces that a brilliant guy like Bezos can go into and hit an A++++ I am absolutely sure he will and look forward to finding out what he does.

By the way, as a stockholder in Etsy, I imagine I would make money off of a deal like this.
Etsy is now an attractive acquisition prospect for Amazon.Etsy merchants worry that an Amazon buyout could pose problems for their businesses.Amazon will need to apply a light touch to keep artisans on board.

Amazon releases finances

Okay... the financial information didn't interest me too much, but the section called Highlights was fascinating.
Amazon.com Announces Fourth Quarter Sales up 22% to $35.7 Billion. SEATTLE --(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 2016-- Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced financial results for its fourth quarter ended December 31, 2015. Operating cash flow increased 74% to $11.9 billion for the trailing ...

Wow! This is one of the harshest attacks I've ever seen on Amazon.

I never really thought about the impact of online sales on brick and mortar property taxes. However, I don't know if it's fair to say that this is mainly Amazon's fault.

While I do a lot of my shopping on Amazon, I pay NY sales tax on all of it. There are other sites--like ones that sell musical instruments--that promote aggressively that there is no sales tax.

The world is shifting away from the local storefront to online sales. Amazon just does it better than other companies do.

What you don't get from buying online is the human factor. When I have a personal relationship with a store or a salesman, they earn my loyalty. A few weeks ago I went to Guitar Center to buy a keyboard. The salesman was so rude that after I waited and waited, I went home and bought it online. And paid no tax.
Amazon is investing in exciting TV and film projects, great! And a new study shows the real cost of doing business

Spotify on Amazon Echo

Amazon announced that Spotify Premium subscribers in the U.S. can now listen to their music on Amazon Echo — just ask Alexa to play any playlist, artist, genre and more from Spotify’s catalog. And because Echo also supports Spotify Connect, customers can effortlessly transfer and control their listening experience from the Spotify app to Echo — select Echo from the list of available devices within the Spotify app.

I don't see it. My Amazon watchlist has dwindled down to nearly nothing. A lot of the new videos are subtitled foreign films. Amazon really needs to license some new shows.

For me personally I'm more than satisfied, but I sympathize if that's not the case for you. Particularly as you are such an Amazon booster.

But from a business sense what they are doing makes perfect sense. They want to make the most money and they want to get the most people on Prime. Making their own content is the way to to that.

Buying content is like leasing a Picasso. It's great to have on your wall, but eventually the term comes to an end. The real money is in owning the work of art because it keeps increasing in value. The ultimate value of a shows like "Transparent" and "Mozart in the Jungle" is that they can keep generating income indefinitely. And there is no other way to see these prize-winning shows except for to sign up for Prime.
