PAAC hosted the First Maker Camp in Charleston, WV at The Martin Luther King Jr Community Center on August 19th. Thanks to Ms Tonya, Mr Tray, PAAC Youth Mentors, the sculpture artist Ms Andrea, and the kind staff at Martin Luther King Jr Community Center for letting us to host this find Maker Camp.

We had WeDo LEGO blocks, LED light wands, marbling paper with shaving cream, Funny Robot Boxes, and Bottle Rockets. It was amazing to see the kids using all their skills, talents and imagination to make. They loved constructing with recycle materials, and learning about LED light circuits.

We cannot wait until we can host another session.

I am curious why you did not make the instructions for all the MAkerCamp projects on the MakerCamp site are not downloadable as PDFs. I can make them of course, but am just wondering.

Wednesday's MakeyMakey adventure. Note to self: gummy worms work great but are too tempting. Old stale cookies are also useful for MakeyMakey.

Inspired by the Olympics in Rio, MakerCamp 2016 in Hong Kong challenged 19 young makers aged 6-15 to make, design and code their own mini-computer gaming device with Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey and Scratch.

What would the young makers make within 3 hours at our signature mini Young Makeathon?

Anyone know of a free or low cost (preferably web-based) app designed for laser cutting? I'm looking for something that allows kids to draw and export to dxf or another format for laser cutting without having to deal with removing extra lines and all the other stuff we have to deal with at the moment. Currently since we use Chromebooks, kids create their designs in the web-based SVG-Edit which I then collect and touch up in Inkscape and then export to a DXF and then we load it into Laserworks on a laptop that is connected to the laser cutter.

Thanks!

Ok for anyone still looking, check out: https://gravit.io - it's the best I've found so far. It allows me to edit paths, set exact sizes of shapes in millimetres, and exports to SVG (which means I would still need to convert to DXF but at least I can make composite shapes and change text to path in Gravit).

Our last day--and what a blast! We learned Java using the materials from Bitsbox--very kid-friendly. Most of the kids had learned Scratch, particularly the girls who were in our Coding in the CLoud camp this summer. Check out their work here: http://www.gemsclub.org/girl_encouragement

Using Bitsbox gave them all a chance to experience the trials of having to watch your punctuation and spacing in coding, but they were very successful in creating many games.

UFOs today! Found paper plate holders at Dollar tree 4/$1 so kids could decorate the plates, tried the tape and plates but the big diodes worked better, thanks Maker Camp!

Slime is not easy to make. Any PLA based glue will not work, only Elmer's glue. That's what I learned
