So do dystopias have an issue with being unable to talk about race?

Arguably, some of the examples used are decade(s) old (Handmaids Tale, Blade runner, Firefly, Children of men) and therefore it's misleading to judge them by today's values and social mores. You can't judge the past with the same social lens of today, it's a distant country. That said more recent examples are used to make the point that even when black and minority ethnic characters are included they act often as token or exotic examples of otherness. But the author is also somewhat a victim of their own complaints as they almost entirely ignore the intersectional issues of under representation and exoticising of women and the gay community in the genre.

While I agree a lot of Sci-Fi resorts to the hyper masculine, single hero saving the world default, isn't the issue also one of under representation of BME, women and gay writers, directors and publishing/studio execs and that both the publishing and TV/movie industries have entrenched themselves in an ideology that any thing other than the default won't sell? In short the bottom line also plays a prejudicial part in this.

Neil Gaiman has invaluable advice to give writers: "Whatever you do, you have one thing that is unique. You have the ability to make art. When things get tough ... make good art. Husband runs off with a politician ... make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by mutated boa constrictor ... make good art. IRS on your trail ... make good art. Cat exploded ... make good art." (Priceless Gaimanisms.)

Even if you are not a writer, this is perhaps one of the most inspirational TED Talks I have ever watched (Anne Madden).  It should make you think, something our media is trying to suppress. I encourage every writer of sci-fi to watch and absorb.  Listen…

In +Jane Friedman last installment of Electric Speed (excellent Newsletter), she mentioned BetaBooks, an online service that promises to organize and streamline this process for writers using beta readers. The timing is perfect for me because I am at that point in my WIP, Silversides. Currently this site is free, but I think that will change once subscriptions go up with writers and readers. I will be trying this out and post my experiences.
