In light of my experiences at ConQuesT 46, I've been thinking about my convention strategy.

Every year, I spend a lot of money showing my books at Gen Con. I sell quite a bit (a little less than $1000, after they get their 10% cut), but expenses are high ($275 for a table on Author's Avenue, $90 for electricity, $1500+ for hotel, etc.). That doesn't even count the inventory I buy for Gen Con.

This past weekend, I exhibited at ConQuesT for the first time. The table was less than $100, and the hotel was less than half what I pay at Gen Con. I still had inventory costs, and I sold fewer books (only 500-750 attendees vs. 50,000+), but I sold enough to easily cover my table AND my inventory expenses.

It seems like ConQuesT was more profitable. Perhaps a better strategy is multiple, smaller cons rather than one large con. At Gen Con, one largely sees the same people year and year, as well, so going to multiple cons across the region, more people are exposed to my name and work.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Throughout written history there have been stories of shadow people. Some are just there out of view, only visible in the peripheral vision. Other shadow people are reported to be malignant with evil intentions. I have chosen to call these creatures The Bedim.
